Recap: Los Angeles vs. Washington

The Los Angeles Kings, who came into the contest struggling putting the puck into the net, had an offensive explosion against Washington on Monday, defeating the Capitals, 5-2.

Kyle Clifford, Anze Kopitar, Jack Johnson, Jarret Stoll and Justin Williams all netted goals for the Kings, who averaged a league-worst 2.02 goals a contest coming in and tallied just twice in their previous three games.

Jonathan Bernier made 20 saves for the win.

"It was good to score and we got it from all of the lines. We had guys around the net tonight," Kings head coach Darryl Sutter said.

Marcus Johansson scored twice for Washington, which has lost two straight since winning four consecutive contests.

Tomas Vokoun stopped 23-of-27 shots before being pulled after the second period. Michal Neuvirth came on and made seven saves in the third period.

Johansson recorded the first tally for the Capitals just 1:34 into the first period, but the Kings netted five straight goals to seize control.

"We had a strong start, we scored the first goal," Capitals left winger Alex Ovechkin said. "After that we stopped playing."

Clifford tied the game midway through the first period with a backhander in the crease following a shot by Trent Hunter from the left circle. It was the first Kings goal in 71:41 and first regulation goal in just over 170 minutes of ice time.

Following a Capitals turnover, Dustin Brown found an open Kopitar in the slot and he tipped it home with 34 seconds left in opening period.

Los Angeles added two more goals in the second.

Johnson wristed one home from the slot at the 3:01 mark following an odd-man rush, and Stoll made it 4-1 with 3:33 remaining as he chopped home a rebound.

Williams scored on the power play midway through the third to make it 5-1 and Johansson's second goal came with 6:18 left in the contest.

The Kings are 11-0-0 this season when they score at least three goals.
