New agriculture program available for youth ? Williston Observer

UVM Extension Center for Sustainable Agriculture recently announced a new match-saving and education program that will cultivate the next generation of Vermont farmers. Beginning in January, the program will give 30 youth engaged or interested in agriculture a chance to explore the challenges and opportunities of managing their own commercial enterprises. They will build financial literacy, start-up capital and management skills by participating in the new Vermont Youth Individual Development Account program.

The Youth IDA program is the only in one of its kind in the U.S., and will consist of a coordinated effort between several agencies, nonprofits and institutions. Young farmers will save up to $500 during a one-year period, for a particular business asset purchase. During that savings period, they will explore the feasibility of managing an agricultural business. The program will provide structured financial literacy training, business management coaching and mentoring from qualified farm business management specialists and established farmers.

Upon successful completion of the one-year program, participants? savings will be matched at a rate of 2:1, giving farmers one program dollar for every dollar they save toward the purchase of a productive farm asset. With a $500 ceiling, this means a participant would potentially have $1,500 to use for an asset purchase. Young farmers will exit the program possessing both seed capital and financial literacy skills?key components in establishing an independent enterprise or assuming more of a management role in the family farm operation.

The program is open to youth ages 14 to 21 engaged or interested in agriculture. Eligibility will favor, but not be limited to: young farmers from households meeting the USDA definition of limited resource household, socially disadvantaged or at-risk; youth who have grown up on a working farm, but have not yet assumed a significant management role in family farm operation; and young farmers who would be good candidates for the FSA Rural Youth Loan Program, but are not eligible because they have not had business management training or experience yet.

According to UVM Extension?s New Farmer Program Coordinator Ben Waterman, ?For youth engaged in farming, start-up capital and having basic farm business management skills can be huge contributors to success early on.? We see the Vermont Agriculture Individual Account Program as a great way to help youth pursue the opportunities of a career in agriculture.?

Youth, families, teachers, and service providers are welcome to get more information about the program from Youth Ag. IDA Program Coordinator Ali Zipparo at azipparo@uvm.edu or 802-656-9139 or visiting the program website at http://www.uvm.edu/extension/youth/vtyouthagida/.

Local hero for community cats | Austin Pets Alive!

Summer is the most difficult time to remain a no-kill community because of kitten season. Kitten season is when cats, primarily feral cats, breed. Kittens come pouring into the shelter from March through September, usually brought in by well-meaning citizens who find them in their yards and think that taking them into a shelter immediately is the best thing for them.

There is a direct link between outside cats breeding and the weather.? Last year, when we were in record drought and heat, we had the lowest intake of kittens to our city shelter in history. This year, the temperatures are a little more moderate, so we?re seeing more (although it?s looking to be the 2nd lowest in history).

Keeping up with the increase has been tough. We have this guide to help people when they find kittens and hope that some good samaritans will raise the kittens and find homes for them (while trapping, neutering, and returning the mama cat to her outside territory) or at least wait to take them to a shelter until they are weaned.

Feral cats have either had very little or no contact whatsoever with people which leaves them mistrustful and fearful around us, so much so that they will never be able to be socialized.? The older a kitten gets without socialization, the more difficult the kitten will be to tame. Our goal as a community is to catch and socialize kittens under 12 weeks old, while doing TNR (trapping, neutering, and returning) on the older cats so they can no longer breed, with the hope of gradually, but significantly reducing the feral cat population.

Carrie Crowe, a volunteer baby kitten bottle feeder at APA!, knew there were feral cats in the streets around her home but wasn?t sure how she could help. One day this summer, she and her husband were thrown headlong into the wonderful, crazy world of TNR and kitten rescue and socialization when they saw kittens, the offspring of a feral mama cat, playing in their neighbor?s yard.? Carrie knew that time was of the essence if she wanted to capture and socialize these kittens. What happened next is the story of how one woman went from feral cat ?newb? to cat trapping/rescue expert in the space of a few weeks with the help of the internet and the advice of friends active in the animal welfare community.

APA!: So, Carrie, how did you come across the kittens you ended up rescuing?

Carrie: Well, my husband was leaving early in the morning to go to the gym when he saw them playing in our neighbor?s yard. He tried to approach them but they ran into a gap in the neighbor?s porch. He alerted me to their presence and I knew right then that I absolutely had to help them. I wasn?t really sure how old they were at first, but after looking online for information, I guessed they were around seven to nine weeks old. And they were absolutely adorable! One grey/white tuxedo, one black/white tuxedo and three solid black kittens.

APA!: Was it easy to capture/rescue the kittens?

Carrie: At first it was pretty hard. I didn?t really know how to go about it. I tried putting food and water out on the porch, and I approached them while wearing thick gloves, with the intention of just grabbing them and putting them in a carrier, but this didn?t work out too well for me! The kittens were far too speedy! I then decided to rent some cat traps from the Austin Humane Society (they rent them for FREE with a credit card on file). They even showed me how to set the traps and suggested tuna and baby food for the bait.

APA!: How did things go once you set up the traps?

Carrie: The day after I got the traps, I spotted the mama kitty walking all of her kittens around the front porch and into the gap. With the help of my husband, the trapping began. I?d set the traps around sunset and we?d both check them before we went to bed and then first thing in the morning. I?s always best to trap at night because it?s cooler and the cats are more active.

You do need to have a lot of patience when trapping feral cats as it doesn?t always go as fast or as smoothly as you would like. It took a night or two before I caught my first cat, an adult black and white tuxedo ? probably the dad!

Since I caught the dad on a Friday night, I took him to Emancipet, since they do feral spay/neuter M-Sat mornings, to get neutered. The Austin Humane Society only does feral spay/neuter on Wednesday and Thursday mornings. As it turns out, the dad was too feral to socialize, so I had him neutered, kept him in the cage overnight on my front porch and then released him the next morning in the same place that I caught him. It?s important to keep cats overnight in the trap after the surgery until the anesthesia wears off. It can make them hallucinate, so they could get hit by a car or become easy prey if they don?t have their wits about them.

A couple of days after trapping the dad, I caught the mama cat, and spayed her the very next morning. As she was also too feral to be adopted into a ?forever home?, I kept her overnight in the trap after the surgery and released her back to the area where I?d caught her the following morning. Remember, it?s not cruel to release spayed and neutered feral cats back onto the streets. Since they can?t be socialized, it?s much more humane to return them to the neighborhood they came from, so they can live out a happy and healthier life now that they are neutered. Plus, they can no longer reproduce, so they won?t be contributing to the increasing number of feral kittens in Austin.

APA!: And what about the kittens? Did you manage to trap them?

Carrie: The kittens were actually much harder to trap than their parents. However, after a few days, I finally managed to capture the grey/white tuxedo kitten, which was socialized, fixed and adopted into her forever home! (See ?Tips? below for Socializing!) After this, I was sure I?d manage to trap the other kittens quickly, but the mama cat was savvy, and moved the remaining kittens to a new hiding place, and I had no idea where they were. Despite this, I continued trapping but instead of capturing kittens, I managed to trap what seemed like every possum and raccoon in the neighborhood! This is, unfortunately, a common hazard when trapping cats!

Eventually some local residents living in a nearby apartment complex informed me that they had seen the mama cat and her kittens going in and out of a hole which led to a large, open space underneath the complex. That night, I put a trap in front of that hole and, sure enough, one of the black/white kittens went right into it! That was, unfortunately, the last kitten I was able to trap from that litter but I haven?t given up, and I?m hopeful I can trap and TNR the other three if they are too feral to socialize.

APA!: How did you manage to socialize the two kittens you trapped, and what happened to them afterwards?

Carrie: Well, the kittens were scared at first but they soon warmed up to me when they realized that I was a source of tasty food! I made a point of holding and petting them while they were getting fed because that way they associated good things with me, or humans in general.

It?s really not that hard to socialize kittens when they?re still young enough (usually between six to ten or 12 weeks) although it can sometimes depend on how feral their mother was, as they learn from her. The key to socialization is just being patient and persistent! I knew that I?d won these kittens over as soon as they started to purr and play!

As for what happened to the kittens, I found a home for the first kitten I caught (the grey and white one) through a friend. She is now named Gracy, and I?m told that she?s a kitten princess!

My mother helped me find a home for the black and white kitten in Dallas, now named Sylvster, and he?s also thriving there with his new brother Sherman.

APA!: Do you have any tips for cat lovers who are new to the whole TNR process, and rehoming kittens?

Carrie: My first piece of advice would be to make use of all the phenomenal information available on the websites of Austin?s many animal welfare organizations. I learned so much by browsing the Austin Humane Society?s website which has specific information on feral cat trapping.

It?s also very important to rely on friends and family for support and advice. I would never have found homes for the two kittens I trapped if it hadn?t been for my friend and my mother. My husband was also great at boosting my morale on those nights when only raccoons and possums ended up in my traps! Finally, I was fortunate enough to have a supportive neighbor who let me have exclusive use of his spare room where I kept the kittens, while socializing, and could come and go as I pleased.

The hardest part of the process for me was finding good homes for the kittens. As I said before, my friends and family were invaluable here, but don?t forget about social media, as Facebook and Twitter can be great for spreading the word. Just make sure they are adopted into a caring ?indoor only? home.

Please don?t turn the other way when you find feral kittens in your neighborhood. I know that it can be very overwhelming when you don?t know what to do, but just think about all the many cat and kitten lives you will be saving!

Carrie?s Trapping ?Tips?:

  • Rent traps from The Austin Humane Society for free. They will even show you how to set them and offer suggestions.
  • Have a ?plan? before you start trapping. Know where you can keep the cat in the trap overnight before you take them to get neutered, and where you?ll keep them overnight after you pick them up from surgery (2 nights total). A monitored front porch, garage (if not too hot) or spare room work fine.
  • Know where to take the cat for spay/neuter. Visit the Austin Humane Society and Emancipet websites for more information. AHS does FREE feral spay/neutering on Wed and Th mornings. Emancipet does feral spay/neutering M-Sat for a small fee. *Don?t trap on Saturday nights, since there are no spay/neuter options on Sunday. (Keep in mind that kittens must be at least 12 weeks old in order to spay/neuter them. That?s only if they are feral and you plan to TNR. If you plan to socialize them and find them forever homes, don?t have them fixed right away. Consult your vet for the best timeframe to spay/neuter hem.)
  • Best foods for trapping include stinky tuna, beef baby food and wet kitten food. Use small plastic lids or small containers, poke two little holes in them, and slide a metal ?twisty? (from a bread bag or your dry cleaning) through the holes. To secure the container to the cage, just twist the twisty around the metal bars.
  • Place the traps in the area where you see the cat/kitten most often. Don?t trap in high foot traffic areas, or where someone might mess with or take the cage. It?s best to keep the trap hidden from people (next to a bush, tree, or inside a fence) but in the path of the cat you?re trying to catch.
  • It?s best to trap at night, when it?s cool. Start and sunset, check the trap every two hours, and before bed. Then, check the trap again first thing in the morning. If you trap during the day, don?t trap when the weather is hot, and check the traps every two hours. Keep them in the shade.
  • When you catch a cat and move it to it?s overnight place, cover the trap with a sheet, so the cat stays calm and doesn?t try to ram the cage to get out.

Carrie?s Socializing ?Tips?

  • Kittens have the best chance for socializing between 6 and 10 or 12 weeks. You can guess their age by their weight. They generally gain 1lb per month. So, at 8 weeks, they are approx. 2lbs.
  • Have a plan for where you will socialize the kitten before you start trapping (spare room, bathroom, or neighbor?s spare room if your house is at max capacity with pets.)
  • If you catch more than one kitten at a time, it might be best to separate them for socializing, as hard as that might be. If they are very attached to each other, it could be hard to get them to bond and trust a person, which is the ultimate goal with socializing.
  • Use gloves or a towel when first holding the kitten. Wrap them like a burrito! Remember, they are scared, not aggressive. They might scratch you and they will likely hiss. But, don?t let that deter you. As they get more comfortable, the scratching and hissing will stop!
  • Have a cat carrier of crate set up for a bed, so the kitten has a ?safe place.? Put out plenty of kitten food/water and a small litter box. If the kitten isn?t using the littler box, place them in the litter and gently show them how to dig with their paws. Works every time!
  • Remember that patience and persistence is key! The more interaction, the better! Feed them while holding them, so they associate you with food ? positive. The goal is to get them to bond with people and trust. As they gain confidence, bring in a friend or two, so they get used to different people and voices. When you?re not in the room, keep a radio on. Once they are playing, purring and engaging you, consider introducing them to another pet. *Make sure your kitten has shots and all tests before introduction. (Kittens can test negative for certain diseases, and then positive later in life, so it?s best to not let them share bowls or toys with other pets, because of the possible saliva transfer.)
  • Once you feel your kitten is ready to find their forever home, ask friends, family and your vet to spread the word. Social media is a great vehicle too, but make sure you ask all the right questions before adopting out your little one. After all your hard work, they deserve a great home!

Chinese Embassy, Companies Mourn Late Ethiopian Premier At Memorial Service in Ethiopia

Addis Ababa ? Staff of Chinese Embassy and representatives of Chinese companies operating in Ethiopia on Thursday paid tribute and respect to the late Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi during a memorial service organized at the Commercial Counselor Office of the Chinese Embassy here in Addis Ababa, capital of Ethiopia.

Speaking on the occasion, Xie Xiaoyan, Chinese Ambassador to Ethiopia, said as good friends of Ethiopia, the Chinese people join Ethiopians in sharing same feeling of deep sadness and sorrow over the untimely passing away of Prime Minister Meles.

The Ambassador hailed the great contribution the late Premier made to peace and stability, economic and social development of Ethiopia.

Meles made great contribution to the peace, development and prosperity of the African continent as well as addressing the global challenges facing the mankind of the world, said Xie.

Reiterating that the late Prime Minister established good relations and friendship with the Chinese leaders, the Ambassador stated that his great contribution to the China-Ethiopia mutual beneficial cooperation in all sectors would be remembered forever.

"His great contribution to the China-Ethiopia mutual beneficial cooperation in all areas, and efforts to promote the development of all-round cooperative partnership relations between the two countries, will be cherished in our memory forever," he said.

"Prime Minister Meles Zenawi's passing away is a great loss for Ethiopian and African people. However, the grand visions, ideas, and thoughts to guide the governance and development of Ethiopia that explored and promoted by the late PM has been accepted and took root deeply in the minds of the Ethiopian people," he said.

He also expressed his firm belief that while inheriting the late Premier's cherished spirit and legacy, the Ethiopian people would turn grief into strength and achieve greater accomplishment on the road to Ethiopian rejuvenation.

"We also believe that under the support of the new leaders of Ethiopia and its people, and the joint efforts by the two sides, the China-Ethiopia relations will continue to stride forward, which will further benefit the two countries and their peoples," said the Ambassador.

He also revealed that a High-Level Delegation led by Hui Liangyu, Chinese Special Envoy and Vice Premier, would attend the funeral of the late Prime Minister scheduled for Sept. 2, 2012.

Reading brief profile of the late Premier, Dina Mufti, Spokesperson of the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said Meles was a pioneer of the New Partnership on Development (NEPAD) and also an advocate for Africa for climate and other issues related to Africa.

He also told reporters that Meles played great role in bringing the relations between Ethiopia and China to a higher level.

Dina said Chinese companies are operating in Ethiopia in different sectors, including in infrastructure development.

Arega Hailu, Director General for Asia and Oceania Affairs within the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said Meles was instrumental to the strong relations Ethiopia has with China.

Arega also said that the late Premier encouraged many Chinese companies to invest in Ethiopia and he inaugurated companies now operational in his country.

The Director General also stated that Meles was the ardent supporter of the China-Africa Cooperation Forum (FOCAC).

"He puts China as the reliable strategic partner in national development, on regional and on common international interests. Hence, he loves to work close with the Chinese leadership," said Arega.

The Director General also indicated that Ethiopia would continue its relations with China with the next leadership.

By investing in various sectors, the Chinese companies have created jobs and have helped to improve the livelihood of Ethiopians, noted the Director General.

"Chinese companies have helped us develop our infrastructures such as roads, telecommunications, power, etc. They are in manufacturing and other sectors," he said.

He also recalled that China reaffirmed its commitment to Ethiopian government officials at the FOCAC Ministerial Meeting in Beijing, China to strengthen relations with Ethiopia and expand its cooperation to make Ethiopia's Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP) successful.

"We still value our relations with China and we still would like to lift it to a higher level. We will continue to work together in the future," he said.

The Director General thanked the Chinese People and Government, and the Chinese companies in Ethiopia for the contribution they have been making to economic and social development in Ethiopia.

He called on them to continue the same in the future.

He thanked the Chinese leadership for condolences sent to the Ethiopian government and families of the late PM, and also for organizing a High-Level Delegation to attend the funeral.

He also extended thanks to the Chinese community in Ethiopia for organizing the Memorial Service and joining Ethiopians mourning PM Meles.
