Flu Can Kill Quickly, Taking Lives of Healthy Children

In just eight months at his new school in Rifle, Colo., Austin Booth made a name for himself as a star athlete, honor student and a popular classmate with a promising future.

But within six days after he contracted the flu last January, Austin was dead. He was 17. His parents had never even considered giving a flu shot to their otherwise healthy teen.

"It was flu season and we knew other kids who were sick and we didn't think that much about it," said his mother, Regina Booth, 42. "He was a healthy teenager."

"He was just one of those kids that excelled at everything," she said. "And he was the type of kid who made friends instantly."

"It was pretty tough -- and it seems like just yesterday," said Booth, who is 38 weeks pregnant and now annually immunizes her four other children, aged 3 to 16.

"Now that we are expecting a new baby, it protects us and the baby," she said.

Debunking Four of the Most Common Flu Shot Myths

Between 3,000 and 49,000 Americans die of influenza each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.More than 200,000 are hospitalized annually with flu-related complications like pneumonia.

In the past four years, the CDC has changed its recommendations and now urges all Americans six months and older get a flu shot. Children under the age of 9, who are getting immunized for the first time, should get two doses, one month apart.

Booth said she still cannot believe how sudden her son's death was. On Tuesday night, he had started and played a full basketball game. By Wednesday night, he was coughing up blood and was rushed to the hospital with pneumonia.

"They intubated him as he struggled to breathe," said his mother. "It was the last time I talked to him."

His father Carl, who worked on an oil rig and couldn't be reached, was never able to see his son conscious again. Austin was airlifted to St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction and at first, doctors thought he would survive.

But soon, his condition got worse -- even on "every antibiotic in the world" -- and Austin had to be taken off the ventilator and manually "bagged." Tests showed the teen positive for the virulent infection MRSA.

"Doctor's said it was a perfect storm of pneumonia and MRSA," said Booth. "He fought Thursday until Monday, but it was more than his body could handle."

Hundreds of Austin's new friends showed up for his funeral. The basketball team retired his #2 jersey and Austin was recognized with a school bench and a memory stone.

"We had never gotten the flu shot -- not any of us," she said. "We thought, we don't need it, we are healthy. If we get the shot it will make us sick."

Dr. William Schaffner, professor and chairman of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, said that people are fooled into thinking that influenza, a serious respiratory infection, is just like a cold.

"People use the word 'flu' very casually to refer to a whole variety of winter illnesses, including a stuffy nose, and that tends to trivialize it," said Schaffner. "It is a serious viral infection -- it wreaks havoc on all the body's systems."

"Although it can be mild and often is, it is often very, very serious and can strike an otherwise normal child and put them in intensive care, usually within 48 hours."

The most serious complications occur among older people, but each year children die of the disease -- and "it's potentially preventable," according to Schaffner.

"While it is an imperfect vaccine, it is the best influenza vaccine at the present time," he said. Though it does not always prevent infection, because viruses change each year, it can "turn a more serious flu into a milder one, so you won't die."

With 120 million doses given each year in the U.S. alone, it is a "wonderfully safe" vaccine, whose only side effects can be a sore arm or, rarely, a day of fever. It cannot give a person the flu. "That's an urban myth," said Schaffner.

Concrete Children '78 - Skateboarding in Cape Town, South Africa

Her hand trembled as she gripped the arrow that was invisible to the human she loved.
Tears leaked from her eyes as he held her close, and she held the arrow, point first behind his back.
He knew what was coming, but was sure it would seal their fate together. He was so wrong.
Her face stayed blank, her mouth silent despite the tears falling freely from her eyes as she drove the arrow through her love's heart.
It disappeared into him, and he suddenly jerked back. The strong, all-consuming love he felt for her suddenly gone and replaced with impossibly strong hate, he bitterly shoved her away and left her crumpled on the floor, collapsed within herself.

The Archers

Every century or so, there is a a new archer. Archers are a beautifully, shattered, broken, cursed species. As legend goes, an angel was gifted with love. It was impossible for the other angels not to love and cherish the young girl. But she wanted real, undying devotion. She fell in love with a human.

After years of trying, she made me perfect arrow infused with her own blood. Love. If shot, the person and the next person they saw or touched would become soulmates. She shot the human, thinking he would fall in love with her, but it had the opposite affect. She was being punished for being so selfish- because she used the arrow on herself, God made the human reject the beautiful angel's love, and instead fall in love with another human. She rejected God, ripping out her own wings then killing the human and his lover. The only reason the selfish, vain angel didn't kill herself was because she carried his child.

Of corse, she was harshly punished. Her child, and all her descendants were cursed to have the same fate as her. All would be female. Falling in love with a human, shooting them with an arrow, eventually ripping out their own wings and murdering the man they so loved, and giving birth to his daughter and dying in childbirth. And so the cycle repeats, on an endless, bloody, terrible loop.

Eventually, the angels developed. Changed. They were no longer as vain as their ancestor, even though they knew they would face the same fate as her. They had pure souls. They created more arrows, shooting alone, empty souls and filling them with love and light for another human. They worked on angels, too, but not an angel and a human. After all, relationships between angels and humans were strictly forbidden.

But on to our story. The latest generation was different. Twins were born. One male, one female. Both were the most amazing archers seen- with completely equal power. As the female grows, they know she will face the same fate as her ancestors. She will end up as a tortured, lifeless fallen angel. But her brother. . . He very well may change the entire world completely. The twins are extremely close, and he doesn't care about any of that. His biggest question: can he save his sister?

The angel that was caring for them, knowing what would happen, kicked them out. They decided to go to earth, with no knowledge of the human world. They had only their arrows, and the clothes they were wearing. And they were in the middle of London. Not only that, but they know other fallen angels will be looking for them. Earth is a dangerous place for an Archer.
Two humans find them, and decide to take them in. They have no idea what they have gotten themselves into. . . .

But these humans are not mere mortals. They believe that they are, though. They had no idea that their father who abandoned them when they were young was one of the highest ranking angels. No other angels know they exist- and they father wants it to stay that way. Other angels being around them would awaken their abilities. They don't know it, but they are definitely a force to be reckoned with. They can manipulate all of the elements. Move entire ocean, burn entire countries, cause devastating hurricanes, all with the blink of an eye.

Angels are already after the two archers, and once they find them with the two half-angels. . . It won't e pretty. They will most likely be killed on sight- the archers know this. The humans intend to leave the city, and go to a small family house in the country. They don't know about who they are or their powers yet, but the twins do. If they can tell them and train them, just maybe they can survive. But even then, they still have to worry about the curse. It is possible that the girl the male twin falls in love with will have the same fate was his sister. There seems to be no way to win. . .
And the curse has already begun to take affect.

Angels

-they do have wings, but they only come out when the angel wants them to. They are very sensitive, as well. A broken wing is about equivalent to all your ribs, and both of your legs being broken.

-they all have certain abilities, based of their lineage. If their mother or father had the gift of invisibility, they would too.

-the higher ranking an angel is, the stronger it is.

-fallen angels keep their abilities, but lose their sense of touch almost completely.

-they are immortal, and the only way to kill them is to chop off their head or if they were cursed by God/an arch angel

-arch angels are the highest ranking angels, and their word is law. To go against one would be a death sentence.

Characters

The twins

Image
They are very close, and would do anything for each other. They aren't identical, but have the same bright blue eyes that are a little too beautiful and enchanting to be human.

Ian Whiteraven
Image
Ian is older than Lila by two minutes, but he definitely has the 'big brother' thing down. He is fiercely protective and loyal. He is very relaxed and easygoing, although he loves teasing his loved ones.
FC: Paul Wesly (OPEN)

Delilah Whiteraven
Image
Delilah is younger than Ian by two minutes, much to her irritation, and is quite different than him. She is very freespirited and headstrong, often giving her brother a hard time. In all honesty, she loves her brother more than anything and is terrified of what might happen if she falls in love with a human. Like her brother, she is rather naive and pure hearted.
FC: Candice Accola (TAKEN)

The humans

Image
They are siblings. Half siblings, technically, with different mothers, but they grew up together. They fight often, but would never give up on each other. They are orphans and have been through a lot together, and will always stick together. No matter what.
They already feel very attracted to them. . . Like a magnetic pull.

Elliot Thorn
Image
Elliot is very lighthearted, always laughing and making people smile. He is very gentle and caring, and not quite as wary as his sister. He is very playful, and sometimes childish.
FC: Louis Tomlinson (OPEN)

Isabel Thorn
Image
Isabel is very independent. She hates feeling clingy, or being around people too much. She is very wary and mistrustful, due to her past. She has a heart of gold, it's just hard to find it sometimes. (OPEN)

Millwards Matt looking to upset Farkland Tyson in Jem Racing Super Paws (Heat 3)

Millwards Matt will be looking to surprise his opponents in the Jem Racing Super Paws (Heat 3) at Poole in England on Tuesday, November 27, 2012. He made his debut this year, but has proven that he possesses the ability to deliver positive results at this level with consistency.

Most of the runners lined up for action in the Grade OR event have been struggling for consistency recently, which means that the competition will be a close one at the end of the day.

However, this will give a solid opportunity to some of the least favourite hounds to cause an upset in order to make a name for themselves and bag a cash prize of ?100. The spectators will be eagerly awaiting the start of action at 21:22 GMT.

According to the bookmakers, the best chances of victory are with Farkland Tyson, despite the fact that he does not have a lot of experience. He is learning with the passage of time, but needs to start challenging the best in the business in order to get the attention of the bettors regularly.

The P. Chatfield?s trained hound started off his career in 2012 with an outing in a Grade GR contest. This was probably too tough for him, but he did not choke under pressure at all. He was up against some very good runners and finished on top of the table in the end.

Since then, he has been running at Poole and his performances have been really impressive. He is a hard worker and knows how to handle pressure. However, he has never appeared in a Grade OR contest in the past, which means that things will be a bit tough for him today.

He completed a hat-trick of victories in lower classes recently and will be looking to carry that positive momentum into today?s race as well.

On the other hand, Millwards Matt finished in a disappointing sixth place last time around in this class. He was unable to cause any problems for his opponents, thus will be under immense pressure right now.

Therefore, the P. Young?s trainee will have to be at his best in order to be competitive at Poole.

But Judge, Operating in the Red was Ordinary Course for this Debtor!

Among the more entertaining opinions we?ve read over the last few weeks is H.?Kenneth Lefoldt, Liquidating Agent for Prevalence Health, LLC v. Michael L. Anthony (In re Prevalence Health, LLC), Case No. 11-00068-ee (Bankr. S.D. Miss. Nov. 7, 2012) (ECF 42), in which the defendant, an insider in a preference action to recover payments on loans made during the year prepetition, argued the debtor was not insolvent at the time of the subject transfers because ?operating in the red was ordinary for the debtor.?? While the debtor might have been operating ?in the red,? this fact wasn?t enough to convince a bankruptcy court in the Southern District of Mississippi that the debtor was solvent at the time of the transfer within the meaning of section 547(b)(3) of the Bankruptcy Code.

Background

Michael L. Anthony was the president and chief operating officer of Prevalence Health, LLC, a provider of medication and disease management services.? He also sat on the board of directors for Prevalence.? During his time as an insider of Prevalence, Anthony made two loans to the company.? The first loan was made in 2006 in the amount of $200,000, which amount was payable on demand and would bear interest at a rate of 8%.? To fund the loan, Anthony borrowed money from First Commercial Bank via two separate lines of credit.? Prevalence first made an interest payment to Anthony in the amount of $1,553.05, which Anthony transferred to First Commercial.? After Anthony made a demand for repayment, Prevalence paid the amount remaining to Anthony, who once again transferred the funds to First Commercial.? Anthony made the second of the two loans in two parts:? First, Anthony paid Prevalence $125,000 in exchange for a promissory note payable on demand that was executed the next day.? The promissory note provided for payment of $175,000 plus 7% interest per annum.? About a month later, Anthony paid the additional $50,000 to fully fund the loan.? In August of 2008, Anthony made a demand for repayment.? Prevalence paid the full $175,000 directly to First Commercial Bank in satisfaction of the personal loan obtained by Anthony to fund the 2008 loan.

Despite these loans, the financial performance of Prevalence continued to decline.? After a series of unsuccessful acquisitions to expand operations and increase customer bases, Prevalence filed for bankruptcy on June 9, 2009.? In August of 2010, the court entered an order approving a chapter 11 plan of liquidation and providing for the appointment of a liquidating trustee.? In June of 2011, the liquidating trustee brought an action to avoid and recover the $175,000 paid to Anthony on account of the second loan.

The Preference Actions

To succeed in a preference action, the liquidating trustee needed to show that the payment he wanted to avoid was (1)?to or for the benefit of a creditor, (2)?for or on account of an antecedent debt owed by the debtor before such transfer was made; (3) made while the debtor was insolvent; (4)?made on or within 90 days before the filing of the petition or between 90 days and one year before the date of the filing of the petition for transfers to an insider, and (5) enabled the creditor to receive more than such creditor would receive if the case were a case under chapter 7, the transfer had not been made, and the creditor received payment of such debt to the extent provided by the bankruptcy code.? To prove the third requirement (that the transfer occurred while the debtor was insolvent), the liquidating trustee needed to show that the transfer was made during the 90 days immediately preceding the petition date, during which time the debtor is presumed to be insolvent, or that the debtor could meet a balance sheet test for the period between 90 days and one year prepetition.? It was undisputed that Prevalence ?virtually always operated while balance sheet insolvent.?? Nevertheless, Anthony audaciously argued that because ?operating in the red was ordinary for the debtor,? the debtor was conducting business as usual during the time of the loan payoff and was not insolvent. ?Unsurprisingly, the court denied this argument and agreed that the payment was an avoidable preference.

In yet another attempt to keep the $175,000, Anthony argued the payment fell under one of the exceptions to the general rule of avoidability.? Section 547(c)(2) provides that the trustee may not avoid a transfer to the extent the transfer was made in the ordinary course of business or according to ordinary business terms.?? This defense is intended to encourage the continuation of business by suppliers with a person on the verge of a bankruptcy filing.?? While there is no one legal test for the ordinary course defense, a court focuses primarily on whether the transaction was within a baseline of dealing that the debtor had with a creditor (the subjective test) or conformed to ordinary business terms (the objective test).? To establish a baseline of dealing, a creditor must show that the transactions and payments made during the preference period were similar to the payments before the preference period.? The four primary factors courts consider in determining the consistency of the parties? conduct is (1) the length of time the parties were engaged in the transaction at issue, (2) whether the amount or form of tender differed from past practices, (3) whether the debtor or creditor engaged in any unusual collection or payment activity, and (4) the circumstances under which the payment was made.

In examining these factors, the court compared the two loans Anthony made to Prevalence.? The court noted the significant difference between the two loans, including the difference in timing of the payments to Anthony, the difference in the duration of the loans, and the difference in the interest rates of the loans.? The court also considered the terms of the loans, where the money was coming from, and in how many disbursements the proceeds of the loan were paid to the debtor.? The court explained several important ways in which the amount and form of tender differed between the two loans:? (1) the 2006 loan was fully funded around the time the note was signed, whereas the 2008 loan was funded by Anthony in two disbursements a month apart, (2) the debtor made payments directly to Anthony for the 2006 loan and paid Anthony more than he was owed according to the terms of the loan, while the debtor made payments directly to First Commercial and paid Anthony less than he was owed on the 2008 loan, and (3) when the debtor repaid the 2006 loan, it repaid principal and accrued interest, while when the debtor repaid the 2008 loan, it repaid only the principal amount of the loan.

The court also found that Anthony failed to meet the objective test because Anthony did not offer any evidence to show that the repayment was in line with what other debtors and creditors in a similar market were making. ?Because the court could not find an undisputed baseline of dealing between Anthony and the debtor to show that the 2008 loan was repaid in the ordinary course of business, it dismissed Anthony?s assertion that section 547(c)(2) offered protection against the trustee?s preference action.

This case serves as a reminder that, although it may be a creative theory, there is no ?ordinary course? exception to the solvency requirement contained in section 547.

Going through a criminal case can be a very stressful and worrying time, especially if it is your first time. We hope that knowing what to expect will help you through the stages of criminal investigation / prosecution.

At the Police Station

If you are suspected of committing a criminal offence you may be either arrested or invited for an interview under caution at a police station. What happens at the police station can often to vital to future proceedings and therefore you should be representation from a specialist criminal law firm such as MJP solicitors. In the UK you are entitled to free legal advice from a solicitor ? do not answer any questions until you have a solicitor present.

The solicitor representing you will be given information about the allegations, without the client present ? this is called disclosure. They will then discuss with you the information they have received and offer advice on how to proceed with the interview. This conversation is confidential.

Once you have spoken to the solicitor you will then be interviewed. The interview is recorded and you will be cautioned.

Once the interview is over you may be charged, bailed to a later date, summonsed or no further action will be taken. Depending on your outcome the solicitor will talk you through the next stages of the investigation, if there are any.

At the Magistrates? Court

There are two types of offences which can be tried at the Magistrates? Court; Summary Only and Either Way offences.

Summary only offences are typically minor offences, such as motoring offences. Either way offences are generally more serious offences, such as burglary, and can also be dealt with in the Crown Court.

Depending on your financial circumstances you may entitled to legal aid which means you can be represented for free.

What happens at the first appearance depends on the offence, this is something your solicitor will offer advice on. If the offence is serious it may be committed to the Crown Court. The court may adjourn the case to a later date so that you can prepare a defence, or the prosecution can prepare their evidence. For less serious offences the matter maybe dealt with on the day but, of course, it all depends if you wish to plead guilty or not guilty.

If you plead guilty you are entitled to a third of the sentence ? this applies to fines, community orders and sentences of imprisonment.

If you plead not guilty your trial can take place within the Magistrates? Court (at a later date). A trial here is slightly different to a Crown Court trial as there is no jury. The prosecution put forward their evidence to the judge followed by the defence putting forward their argument on your behalf, this may include the use of witnesses.

After all the evidence is given the judge, or judges, will then retire to consider their verdict.

At the Crown Court

The Crown Court can be considered as the next step up from the Magistrates? Court.

If you have elected to go to trial the case will take place before 12 members of the jury. In short the prosecution will put forward their evidence to the jury, followed by your barrister putting forward your defence to them.

The judge will then summarise the arguments put forward for the jury and then the jury leave the court to discuss the evidence and come to a decision. If the jury can not unanimously decide on a verdict (they all agree the same) and a period of time has passed then a majority verdict will be accepted.

If you are found guilty, or have pleaded guilty, your barrister will mitigate on your behalf putting forward your circumstances to get the best possible sentence.

(AP) ? The Rolling Stones made a triumphant return to the London stage on Sunday night in the first of five concerts to mark the 50th anniversary of their debut as an American-oriented blues band.

They showed no signs of wear and tear ? except on their aging, heavily lined faces ? as frontman Mick Jagger swaggered and strutted through a stellar two-and-a-half hour show. He looked remarkably trim and fit and was in top vocal form.

The Stones passed the half-century mark in style at the sometimes emotional gig that saw former bassist Bill Wyman and guitar master Mick Taylor join their old mates in front of a packed crowd at London's 02 Arena.

It was the first of five mega-shows to mark the passage of 50 years since the band first appeared in a small London pub determined to pay homage to the masters of American blues.

Jagger, in skin-tight black pants, a black shirt and a sparkly tie, took time out from singing to thank the crowd for its loyalty.

"It's amazing that we're still doing this, and it's amazing that you're still buying our records and coming to our shows," he said. "Thank you, thank you, thank you."

Lead guitarist Keith Richards, whose survival has surprised many who thought he would succumb to drugs and drink, was blunter: "We made it," he said. "I'm happy to see you. I'm happy to see anybody."

But the band's fiery music was no joke, fuelled by an incandescent guest appearance by Taylor, who played lead guitar on a stunning extended version of the ominous "Midnight Rambler," and Mary J. Blige, who shook the house in a duet with Jagger on "Gimme Shelter."

The 50th anniversary show, which will be followed by one more in London, then three in the greater New York area, lacked some of the band's customary bravado ? the "world's greatest rock 'n' roll band" intro was shelved ? and there were some rare nostalgic touches.

Even the famously taciturn Wyman briefly cracked a smile when trading quips with Richards and Ronnie Wood.

The concert started with a brief video tribute from luminaries like Elton John, Iggy Pop and Johnny Depp, who praised the Stones for their audacity and staying power. The Stones' show contained an extended video homage to the American trailblazers who shaped their music: Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Otis Redding, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash and others. The montage included rare footage of the young Elvis Presley.

The Stones began their professional career imitating the Americans whose music they cherished, but they quickly developed their own style, spawning hundreds ? make that thousands ? of imitators who have tried in vain to match their swagger and style.

The concert began with some early Stones' numbers that are rarely heard in concert, including the band's cover of the Lennon-McCartney rocker "I Wanna Be Your Man" and the Stones original "It's All Over Now."

They didn't shy away from their darker numbers, including "Paint It Black" and "Sympathy for the Devil" ? Jagger started that one wearing a black, purple-lined faux fur cape that conjured up his late '60s satanic image.

He even cracked a joke about one of the band's low points, telling the audience it was in for a treat: "We're going to play the entire "Satanic Majesty's Request" album now," he said, referring to one of the band's least-loved efforts, a psychedelic travesty that has been largely, mercifully, forgotten.

He didn't make good on his threat.

He also made fun of the sky-high ticket prices, which had exposed the band to some criticism in the London press.

"How are you doing up in the cheap seats," he said, motioning to fans in the upper rows of the cavernous 02 Arena. "Except they're not cheap seats, that's the problem."

But Jagger seemed more mellow than usual, chatting a bit about the good old days and asking if there was anyone in the crowd who had seen them in 1962, when they first took to the stage.

He said 2012 had been a terrific year for Britain and that the Stones nearly missed the boat, playing no role in the celebration of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, the London Olympics, or the new James Bond film.

"We just got in under the wire," he said. "We feel pretty good."

Give the gift of premium Web services

8 hrs.

As you're trying to come up with great gifts for the holidays, software likely isn't the first thing that comes to mind. It can make a great gift for the right person, though, especially when they're not willing to shell out the cash themselves (as so few people are). Here are some of our favorite (and your favorite) premium Web services that not only boost productivity, but dish out a little holiday cheer too.

Note: Most of these are monthly subscriptions, so you can gift them however you like. Giving someone a few months or a year of a service is a great gift that you can tweak for your budget, and leave yourself room for the same gift next year if they really like it.

If a service doesn't offer a gift option, you can always use a prepaid credit card and give it to them for use with the service you're gifting.

SUBSCRIPTIONS?UNDER $5 A MONTH?

A personalized domain name
It?may sound silly for the No.?1 item on our list, but it's the cheapest subscription you can give, costing only $3.99 a year (that's 33 cents a month), and it's something everyone should have. They may not know it, but a personalized domain name can come in extremely handy, and will only get more important as time goes on. They can post their online CV or resume there, redirect it to their Twitter or Facebook page, and further control how the Internet sees you. The quicker you snatch it up before someone else with the same name, the better. We've linked to Namecheap below, since that's your favorite domain registrar, but check out our Hive Five for a few other options.

Crashplan+
If you have a friend who still isn't backing up their data, it's the perfect time to give them the gift of bulletproof backup thanks to Crashplan. Even if they're backing up to an external drive, that isn't good enough???they need something in the cloud so no matter what happens, their backups are always accessible and they don't become another sad story of lost data. Crashplan is our favorite option, being cheap and easy to set up, so get them in the habit now. If you're particularly cheap, RobotTaco notes that you can get a free subscription right now from this page.

LastPass and Xmarks Premium
I
f you know someone with multiple computers, the gift of synchronization can be a wonderful thing. Give them a combined subscription to LastPass and Xmarks for their passwords, bookmarks, history, open tabs, and everything else so they're able to browse easily from any computer.?

Xmarks is convenient, but LastPass is the most important app here, as it gives you the enhanced security everyone should have???make sure they create good passwords and turn on two-factor authentication, while you're at it, so they don't fall prey to the ever-increasing number of hacks happening nowadays.?

The pro versions give you access to the mobile apps for each service, more secure two-factor authentication with a thumb drive or YubiKey, plus an ad-free experience and priority support. You can buy each service separately, but buying them both together gets you a pretty sweet discount.

Pandora One
Everyone loves Pandora, but no one likes ads interrupting their music. Reader jrod3737recommended a subscription to Pandora One as a gift for just about anyone: it not only ditches the ads, but lets you use the Pandora desktop client, customize your experience with skins, and listen to higher quality audio all day long. You can either buy a month-to-month subscription or grab an entire year for a discounted price.

Evernote Premium
Evernote is still your favorite note-taking application, and it's only gotten better lately. If you know someone that isn't using Evernote yet???particularly if they need some extra organization in their life??a subscription to Evernote Premium is a great way to get them started. A premium subscription gets you more space per month, offline notebooks, collaborative notes, better speed, PDF search, priority support, an ad-free experience, and more. It's the perfect way to take someone's organization from good to awesome with one simple download.

SUBSCRIPTIONS UNDER $10 A MONTH

Amazon Prime
Amazon Prime's combination of two-day shipping and sizable library of streaming TV shows and movies makes a fantastic gift for?...?well, anyone who ever uses Amazon. And if they don't use Amazon, they will once they can buy anything with free two-day shipping. Of course, you could always share your two-day shipping benefits with them, but getting them their own subscription lets them stream movies too, which is always nice???especially if they have a home theater PC or streaming set-top box in their living room.

Netflix and Hulu Plus
For the true TV addict, grab them a subscription to Netflix and/or Hulu Plus so they can watch all their favorite movies and TV shows on demand. Netflix is great for movies and TV shows alike, while Hulu Plus is particularly good for watching current seasons of shows as they air. Both subscriptions let you stream to a set-top box, too, and are the perfect companions for ditching an expensive cable subscription. Grab one or both for your friends and help set them free from the shackles of cable TV.

Spotify Premium
If your friend has truly embraced streaming and switched to Spotify for their music-listening needs, they need a premium subscription.?

Not only will it get rid of the ads (which the cheaper "Unlimited" subscription will also do), but it gives them higher-quality audio and lets them listen on their iPhone or Android phone, truly completing the Spotify experience.

?It may not be ready to replace most people's libraries, but if you know someone whose fallen in love with it, you should help them go all-out with a Premium subscription.?

Alternatively, if you don't like Spotify, you can grab them a subscription to one of the other great music services out there, like Grooveshark or Rdio.

FOR THE BIG SPENDERS: SUBSCRIPTIONS $10 A MONTH AND UP

A VPN for privacy and international browsing
A VPN (virtual private network)?may seem like an ultra geeky gift, but it's something not everyone knows they need, and nobody wants to pay for. However, it can be useful for all sorts of people, but especially good for users looking for an extra bit of privacy (like bittorrent users) or, as reader JeshuaSanmentions, those living internationally (who?want to watch Hulu or listen to Spotify when it isn't available in their country). Every user is different, so hit the link below to see some of the VPNs we recommend.

  • Choose a VPN (Subscriptions range from $7.99/month to $38/month)

Extra Dropbox space
Dropbox is one of our all-time favorite Web services, and while you can grab a lot of space for free, sometimes you just need to pony up for a premium subscription. A subscription to expanded space can be great for students, video editors with large files, or people that just want to sync their large musicor photo libraries across computers. Alternatively, you can also grab someone one of the cheaper options, like Google Drive, Skydrive, or Box.

A special thanks goes out to everyone who provided suggestions last week! It made putting together these guides a lot easier, and a better fit for you.

US trucker nabbed with ammo in Mexico is freed

EL PASO, Texas (AP) ? A Dallas trucker imprisoned for seven months in Mexico on accusations that he had tried to smuggle in assault rifle ammunition broke down in tears Friday as he returned to the United States, saying he had at times given up hope.

Jabin Bogan claimed he was on his way to Phoenix to deliver the ammunition in April when he took a wrong highway exit and accidentally crossed the border into Mexico. The 27-year-old was arrested and taken to a Mexican maximum security prison.

"Some days I gave up hope. Some days I felt like God was, to be honest in my heart, like God was laughing. Like he was just punishing me for no reason. I felt like just giving up," he said during a brief news conference in El Paso, just minutes after arriving back in the U.S.

Bogan tearfully thanked his supporters, and said that at times he felt like taking his own life or someone else's.

"I was the only black American person in the whole prison. God brought me through and I made it," he said.

Bogan was released from the Mexican prison last week but had been detained by immigration authorities until Friday. He was found guilty of possession of military ammunition and sentenced to three years, but the ruling was later commuted for time served and a fine.

He was arrested on April 17 in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, just across the border from El Paso. Bogan said he was headed to Phoenix to deliver ammunition when he got lost and told Mexican authorities that a law enforcement officer at the border told him to continue driving across the international bridge.

Bogan said he attempted to turn back when he realized he had crossed into Mexico, but the layout of the traffic lanes prevented him from returning without first crossing into the truck inspection area in Juarez, where his truck was searched.

He said Friday that when he acknowledged to the agents he had ammunition, "they said, 'in this side of the country it's illegal to have bullets.' And that's when everything went upside down they took me in and never let me out."

During his trial, Mexican customs agents contradicted prosecutors' claim that Bogan had 268,000 bullets hidden under the floorboards of his 18-wheeler's trailer when he was arrested. Agents testified in June that Bogan was trying to make a U-turn back into the U.S. when they found the ammunition bundled on top of wooden pallets inside the trailer.

Bogan was arrested less than 100 feet from a giant billboard that reads, "no more weapons." The sign, unveiled by Mexican President Felipe Calderon two months before Bogan was caught, was made out of seized high-caliber rifles and ammunition.

Calderon has blamed lax U.S. gun laws for the flow of weapons into Mexico.

An appeal filed in August by Bogan's lawyer in Mexico, Emilio de la Rosa, reduced the charge from smuggling to possession of military ammunition. That allowed Bogan to be released after serving a portion of his sentence and paying a fine. He also was sentenced to supervised release, which he can do by mail.

The ammunition belonged to United Nations Ammunition. De la Rosa said the bullets would not be returned to the company.

A spokesman with the Mexican Attorney General did not immediately respond to a request seeking comment.

Bogan's attorney, Carlos Spector, maintains that Bogan made an honest mistake. But he said his lawyers decided not to fight the case, in part because of the potential political implications.

"He (De la Rosa) knew the options were get him out in six or seven months or sink him with a 30-year-sentence. Asking for a not-guilty sentence was impossible because the Mexican government had to get something out of this," Spector said.

World ?not on track? for achieving Education For All | RESULTS UK ...

Education For All Global Monitoring Report 2012

Education For All Global Monitoring Report 2012

Last month UNESCO published the 10th annual Education For All Global Monitoring Report. Developed by an independent team and published by UNESCO, the GMR is an authoritative reference on the global community?s commitment and progress towards Education for All.

In April 2000 more than 1,100 participants from 164 countries gathered in Dakar, Senegal, for the?World Education Forum.?The participants, ranging from teachers to prime ministers, academics to policy-makers, non-governmental bodies to the heads of major international organizations, adopted the?Dakar Framework for Action, Education for All: Meeting Our Collective Commitments and agreed upon six wide-ranging education goals to be met by 2015. Parts of these goals went on to form the basis of the Millennium Development Goal to achieve universal primary education by 2015 (MDG 2).

As Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO, says in her foreword to the report, ?there has been undeniable progress? in some areas, like expansion of early childhood care and improvements in gender parity in primary schools. But overall, the news is not good. Bokova says:

?With three years to go until the 2015 deadline, the world is still not on track. Progress towards some goals is faltering. The number of children out of school has stagnated for the first time since 2000. Adult literacy and quality of education still demand faster progress.?

The report makes for depressing reading. Here are some of the headlines:

  • Improvements in early childhood care have been too slow. In 2010, around 28% of children under five suffered from stunting, and less than half the world?s children received pre-primary education.
  • Progress towards universal primary education is stalling. 61 million children of primary age are still out of school around the world. And frighteningly, for every 100 children out of school, 47 are never expected to go to school.
  • Many young people lack even basic foundation skills. UNESCO estimates that in 123 low and lower middle income countries, around 200 million 15-24 year olds have not even completed primary school, equivalent to one in five young people.
  • Adult literacy remains an elusive goal. The number of illiterate adults has dropped by just 12% between 1990 and 2010. Around 775 million adults remain illiterate, two-thirds of them women.
  • Gender disparities remain in many countries. In 2010 there were still 17 countries with fewer than nine girls for every ten boys in primary school. In another twist, in more than half of the 96 countries that have not achieved gender parity at secondary school, boys are at a disadvantage.
  • Global inequality in learning outcomes remains stark. As many as 250million children are still unable to read or write by the time they should be reaching grade 4 of school.

At RESULTS we have long campaigned for more progress on achieving education for all children, no matter what country they live in, how much money their parents have, whether they are a girl or a boy, or a child living with a disability.

As we get closer to the 2015 deadline for the existing global goals, we will be continuing to push for the UK and other global leaders to do more to support children, particularly the most vulnerable and marginalised, to access and complete a quality education. And as the world begins to turn its attention to developing a new set of goals to replace the Millennium Development Goals in 2015, we will be urging that education and the unfinished business of Education For All remain central to all our development efforts.

After all, without education, what progress is possible?

Finnish app store startup bets on Android in Asia

HELSINKI (Reuters) - Finnish technology startup Blaast on Wednesday opened an Android application store hoping to tap into booming demand for affordable smartphones in Indonesia and other emerging markets.

The 2010-founded Blaast has built a platform to distribute apps to mid-range cellphones, enabling carriers to sell more data packages bundled with free access to applications.

"Android is going to own over 75 percent of smartphone sales in emerging markets," said Blaast Chief Executive Joonas Hjelt.

Blaast said its Android store will launch in Indonesia with No 2 carrier XL Axiata, preinstalled on Sony's new Xperia J smartphone. So far operators in Malaysia and Bangladesh have launched Blaast service for basic cellphones.

Google's Android has become the dominant smartphone platform over the last quarters, controlling around 2/3 of smartphone sales globally. Models costing less than $200 have boosted Android demand, especially in emerging markets.

Statistics Key To Success In Run-and-Gun Basketball

Faith Baptist Bible isn't even a Division III team. Everything I've read, from people in the know (http://www.d3boards.com/index.php?topic=4558.12195 -- starting around page 814) indicates that Grinnell specifically intended to have Jack Taylor set this record. He literally wasn't playing defense -- he was standing around at halfcourt to receive an outlet pass so he could jack up yet another 3.

Somebody watching the video noticed that Faith was cheering this on, and the Grinnell crowd was cheering scoring by both teams (http://www.d3boards.com/index.php?topic=4558.msg1469592). I have a suspicion that they were in on this joke. Given that their opponent was not an NCAA team, I don't think this record should count.

It's interesting that for all this, they've never won an NCAA tourney game (Division III, that is). I don't think they've even won their conference (see http://d3hoops.com/teams/Grinnell/Men/2011-12/index [d3hoops.com] and look at the other years -- usually their last game is against a conference team, and they've always lost). That kind of run and gun and press may be fun to play and watch, but it doesn't work against good teams.

And there's plenty of very good basketball being played in Division III. Yes, it's very rare for Division III teams to beat Division I, but a couple of weeks ago MIT lost to Harvard 69-54, and the game was not a blowout -- Harvard had to work hard for its W (Harvard shortly thereafter beat Manhattan College, which is also Division I, 79-45). If you watch the real power teams in Division III -- schools like MIT (yes, MIT is ranked #1 in Division III right now, and they have some damn good players, including a point guard, Mitchell Kates, who was abusing the Harvard back court all game), Amherst, Williams, Franklin and Marshall, Cabrini, UW-Whitewater (which beat MIT last year in the semifinal, and went on to win the title), it's very high quality basketball, just not the kind of athleticism you'll find in Division I. Teams like these, that play real defense and are in control on offense, would make short work of Grinnell.

And one of our (MIT) alumni, Jimmy Bartolotta '09, was Division III national Player of the Year, and is now playing professional basketball in Iceland.

(Yes, I'm an Ancient and Honorable Nerd of the Infinite Corridor -- VI-3 '87. I'm unofficially one of the team photographers. See http://rlk.smugmug.com/Sports/Basketball [smugmug.com])

The Yeshiva World PHOTOS: Terror Attack on Board a Tel Aviv Bus ...

12:13PM IL: A terrorist detonated a bomb on board a Dan Company bus in Tel Aviv on Shaul HaMelech Street near Weizman Street. According to police, it has been confirmed the explosion is a terror attack.

MDA, Zaka, and Ichud Hatzalah have declared a multi-casualty incident. There are at least 10 wounded, some listed in serious condition.

UPDATE (AP):?The bus exploded about noon on one of the coastal city?s busiest arteries, near the Tel Aviv museum and across from an entrance to Israel?s national defense headquarters.

The bus was charred and blackened, its side windows blown out and its glass scattered on the asphalt. The wounded were evacuated and blood was splattered on the sidewalk.

An Israeli driver who witnessed the explosion told Army Radio the bus was ?completely charred inside.? Another witness said there were few passengers on the bus when it exploded. The witnesses spoke to Israeli TV and were not identified.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said authorities were investigating whether the bomb had been planted and left on the bus or whether it was the work of a suicide bomber.

?We strongly believe that this was a terror attack,? he said.

He said that of the 10 wounded, three were moderately to seriously hurt.

In Gaza, the Tel Aviv bombing was praised from mosque loudspeakers, while Hamas? television interviewed people praising the attack as a return of militants? trademark tactics.

Natalie Khawam, Jill Kelley's Twin Sister, Gives Press Conference With Gloria Allred (VIDEO)

WASHINGTON, Nov 20 (Reuters) - The twin sister of one of the women in the David Petraeus scandal appeared before the media with celebrity attorney Gloria Allred on Tuesday but declined to answer questions about her links to Petraeus, who quit as director of the CIA after admitting an affair.
Natalie Khawam also did not discuss her relationship with Marine General John Allen, who succeeded Petraeus as the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan.
Allen has been linked to Khawam's twin, Tampa, Florida, socialite Jill Kelley, through "flirtatious" emails that turned up in the Petraeus investigation.
Both Allen and Petraeus wrote letters of support on Khawam's behalf when she was in a custody dispute with her ex-husband.
Allred told reporters that Petraeus and his wife, Holly, were long-time family friends of the sisters.
"They have loved Natalie's child and emotionally supported her and her son through the toughest times in Natalie and her son's life," Allred, who has a long list of celebrity clients, said at the news conference at the Ritz-Carlton hotel.
She did not mention the letter of support written by Allen, who took over as the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan when Petraeus left the post to become director of the CIA in September 2011.
Petraeus quit the CIA job on Nov. 9, admitting that he had a n affair.
The affair with his biographer, Paula Broadwell, was revealed when the FBI found communications between her and Petraeus. Kelley had set the investigation in motion by telling an FBI agent that she had been receiving threatening emails that were eventually traced to Broadwell.
That investigation also uncovered emails between Kelley and Allen t hat a re now the subject of a Defense Department internal inquiry. Allen has denied that the two had a sexual relationship, officials have said on condition of anonymity.
At the news conference, Khawam described her sister as a kind, generous person and her "best friend." She did not provide details about her or Kelley's relationship with the Petraeus or Allen families, or about her custody dispute.
Khawam "will continue to love and support Jill for doing the right thing," Allred said, without elaborating on what she meant by "right thing." Jill Kelley has not been charged with any wrongdoing.
Khawam's ex-husband, Grayson Wolfe, was awarded sole custody of their 4-year-old son and a judge found that Khawam "has extreme personal deficits in the areas of honesty and integrity."
"I look forward to the day when I'm able to answer everyone's questions and explain what really happened in this matter," Khawam said on Tuesday. She did not take questions. (Reporting by Karey Wutkowski and David Ingram; Editing by Bill Trott)

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - Hector "Macho" Camacho was clinging to life Wednesday after being shot in the face while in a car, with doctors and his family expected to decide whether to remove the former boxing champion from life support.

Doctors initially had said Camacho was in critical, but stable condition and expected to survive after he was shot Tuesday night in his hometown of Bayamon. But his condition worsened overnight and his heart stopped at one point, said Dr. Ernesto Torres, director of the Centro Medico trauma center in San Juan.

"He's battling minute to minute. This is the most important fight of his life," Torres told The Associated Press outside the hospital in the Puerto Rican capital.

Torres said doctors were trying to determine the boxer's level of brain activity.

The specialists will then consult with other doctors and Camacho's mother, who flew in Wednesday from New York, to discuss whether he should be removed from life support, said Ismael Leandry, a longtime friend and former manager who was also at the hospital.

"We just have to wait to see if `Macho' gets better. It's a hard battle," Leandry told AP.

Torres said Camacho's mother, Maria, spent about 20 minutes with her son, one of the most dynamic boxing personalities of his era, and was expected to return for a second visit on Wednesday night.

"His mother came and she is devastated," he said. "She knows the prognosis is not at all favorable."

A godson, Widniel Adorno, said the family has discussed the possibility of organ donation but no final decision has been made.

The 50-year-old Camacho was outside a bar in a parked Ford Mustang with a friend when he was shot in the face. The friend, identified as 49-year-old Adrian Mojica Moreno, was killed. Police said two assailants fled in an SUV but no arrests have been made and no motive has been disclosed.

Camacho was rushed to Centro Medico, where doctors initially said the bullet passed through his jaw and lodged in his shoulder. Torres said the bullet damaged three of the four main arteries in his neck and fractured two vertebrae, which could leave him paralyzed if he were to survive.

Steve Tannenbaum, who has also represented Camacho in the past, had been told earlier by friends at the hospital that the boxer would make it.

"This guy is a cat with nine lives. He's been through so much," he said. "If anybody can pull through it will be him."

Friends and family members waited anxiously at the hospital, fondly recalling Camacho's high-energy personality and his powerful skills in the ring.

"He was like a little brother who was always getting into trouble," said former featherweight champion Juan Laporte, a fellow Puerto Rican who grew up and trained with Camacho in New York.

Camacho has been considered one of the more controversial figures in boxing, but also popular among fans and those who worked in the sport.

"The Macho Man was a promoter's dream," renowned promoter Don King told AP. "He excited boxing fans around the world with his inimitable style. He was a nice, amiable guy away from the ring."

King had promoted Camacho but was caught off guard by news of the attack on the former champion. "What a tragedy this is," he said. "I'm very sorry for Hector and his family. My prayers go out to him."

The fighter's last title bout came against then-welterweight champion Oscar De La Hoya in 1997, a loss by unanimous decision. He last fought in May 2010, losing to Saul Duran. Tannenbaum said they were looking at a possible bout in 2013.

"We were talking comeback even though he is 50," he said. "I felt he was capable of it."

Camacho was born in Bayamon, one of the cities that make up the San Juan metropolitan area

He left Puerto Rico as a child and grew up mostly in New York's Harlem neighborhood, one of the reasons he later earned the nickname "the Harlem Heckler."

He went on to win super lightweight, lightweight and junior welterweight world titles in the 1980s.

Camacho has fought other high-profile bouts in his career against Felix Trinidad, Julio Cesar Chavez and Sugar Ray Leonard. Camacho knocked out Leonard in 1997, ending what was that former champ's final comeback attempt.

Camacho has a career record of 79-6-3.

In recent years, he has divided his time between Puerto Rico and Florida, appearing regularly on Spanish-language television as well as on a reality show called "Es Macho Time!" on YouTube. In San Juan, he had been living in the beach community of Isla Verde, where he would obligingly pose for photos with tourists who recognized him on the street, said former pro boxer Victor "Luvi" Callejas, a neighbor and friend.

"We all know what Macho Camacho has done, but in the last couple of months he hasn't been in any trouble," Callejas said as he kept vigil outside the hospital. "He has been taking it easy. He's been upbeat."

Drug, alcohol and other problems have trailed Camacho since the prime of his boxing career. He was sentenced in 2007 to seven years in prison for the burglary of a computer store in Mississippi. While arresting him on the burglary charge in January 2005, police also found the drug ecstasy.

A judge eventually suspended all but one year of the sentence and gave Camacho probation. He wound up serving two weeks in jail, though, after violating that probation.

His wife also filed domestic abuse complaints against him twice before their divorce several years ago.
