US Airways Flight diverts to New Mexico

Law enforcement officials work around a US Airways flight at Philadelphia International Airport, after the plane returned to the airport, Thursday, Sept. 6, 2012, in Philadelphia. A security scare that prompted authorities to recall an airborne U.S. flight was the result of an apparent hoax, police said Thursday. (AP Photo/Matt Rourke)

A US Airways flight from Tampa, Fla., to Phoenix has made a precautionary landing in Albuquerque, N.M., after the pilots reported a crack in the plane's windshield.

Airline spokesman Davien Anderson says the Airbus A319 did not lose cabin pressure and the landing was routine.

The pilots did not declare an emergency.

US Airways Flight 265 was carrying 119 passengers and took off just after 7:30 a.m. Eastern time Sunday with a planned arrival at about 9 a.m. MST in Phoenix.

Anderson says US Airways is sending another plane to bring the passengers to Phoenix.

Do black people support Obama because he's black?

Surviving slavery, segregation and discrimination has forged a special pride in African-Americans. Now some are saying this hard-earned pride has become prejudice in the form of blind loyalty to President Barack Obama.

Are black people supporting Obama mainly because he's black? If race is just one factor in blacks' support of Obama, does that make them racist? Can blacks' support for Obama be compared with white voters who may favor his Republican challenger, Mitt Romney, because he's white?

These questions have long animated conservatives who are frustrated by claims that white people who oppose Obama's policies are racist. This week, when a black actress who tweeted an endorsement of Romney was subjected to a stream of abuse from other African-Americans, the politics of racial accusation came full circle once again.

Stacey Dash, who also has Mexican heritage, is best known for the 1995 film "Clueless" and the recent cable-TV drama "Single Ladies." On Twitter, she was called "jigaboo," ''traitor," ''house nigger" and worse after posting, "Vote for Romney. The only choice for your future."

The theme of the insults: A black woman would have to be stupid, subservient or both to choose a white Republican over the first black president.

Russell Simmons, the hip-hop mogul and Obama backer, called Dash's experience "racism." Said Barbara Walters on "The View": "If she were white, this wouldn't have happened."

Twitter users are by no means representative of America, and many black Obama supporters quickly denounced the attacks. But for people like Art Gary, an information technology professional, the reason Dash was attacked is simple: She is a black woman supporting a white candidate over a black one.

"It goes both ways," said Gary, who is white. "There is racial bias amongst whites, and there is racial bias amongst blacks. But as far as the press is concerned, it only goes one way."

Antonio Luckett, a sales representative in Milwaukee who is black, called the attacks on Dash unfair. But when people speak out against a symbol of black progress like Obama, he said, "African-Americans tend to be internally hurt by that."

"We still have a civil rights (era) mentality, but we're not living in a civil rights-based world anymore," he said. "We want to say, 'You're black, you need to stand behind black people.'"

Luckett said one reason he voted for Obama in the 2008 primary against Hillary Clinton was because Obama is black: "Yes, I will admit that."

Is that racism? Not in Luckett's mind. "It's voting for someone who would understand your side of the coin a lot better."

Such logic runs into trouble when applied to a white person voting for Romney because he understands whiteness better. Ron Christie, a black conservative who worked for former President George W. Bush, finds both sides of that coin unacceptable.

"It's not the vision that our leaders in the civil rights movement would have envisioned and be proud of in the era of the first African-American president," Christie said.

Martin Luther King Jr. fought Jim Crow laws, which deprived blacks of political rights after Reconstruction, upheld by Southern Democrats. But black voters switched after Democratic President Lyndon B. Johnson pushed through the 1960s civil rights legislation and Republicans successfully pursued the votes of white people who disliked the civil rights agenda.

Since then, Democrats have persistently wooed black voters with programs and platforms that African-Americans favor, and the party has been rewarded every four years.

Clinton got 83 percent of the black vote in 1992 and 84 percent in 1996; the third-party candidate Ross Perot probably sliced away some of Clinton's black support. Al Gore got 90 percent in 2000; John Kerry got 88 percent in 2004. Obama captured 95 percent in 2008, and 2 million more black people voted than in the previous election.

Christie says he, too, shares the sense of pride in Obama smashing what for blacks is the ultimate glass ceiling. He understands that black pride springs from a shared history of being treated as less than human, while the history of pride in whiteness has a racist context.

But he still sees black people voting for Obama out of a "straitjacket solidarity."

Christie sees it in his barbershop, where black men shifted from calling candidate Obama "half-white" and "not one of us" to demanding that Christie stop opposing the first black president.

He sees it in the comments of radio host Tom Joyner, who told his millions of listeners a year ago, "Let's not even deal with facts right now. Let's deal with our blackness and pride ? and loyalty. . I'm not afraid or ashamed to say that as black people, we should do it because he's a black man."

The actor Samuel L. Jackson said much the same thing: "I voted for Barack because he was black," he told Ebony magazine. "Cuz that's why other folks vote for other people ? because they look like them."

In 2011, as black unemployment continued to rise, the chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus said that if Clinton was still president, "we probably would be still marching on the White House . (but) nobody wants to do anything that would empower the people who hate the president."

And just last week, the rapper Snoop Dogg posted a list of his voting reasons online. No. 1 on his pro-Obama list: He's black. Snoop's top reason to not vote for Romney: He's white.

All of this may help explain why Veronica Scott-Miller, a junior at historically black Hampton University, directed the following tweet at Dash: "You get a lil money and you forget that you're black and a woman. Two things Romney hates."

In an interview, Scott-Miller said the GOP fought Obama's effort to provide funding for historically black colleges like hers. She dislikes Romney's opposition to abortion and thinks Republicans have a "negative stigma about us . they make generalizations in their speeches about our race in general, and they make up terms like welfare queens and stuff."

Told that some saw her tweet as racist, she said that's not what she meant. "I was saying that as a black woman, Romney doesn't have that much that would make us want to vote for him," said Scott-Miller, who is black. "Because Barack Obama lives with three black women in his house, he knows about what they need, he knows about the issues we may be facing, he talks to black women on the regular."

Sherrilyn Ifill, a law professor at the University of Maryland, wrote a column last week exploring why so many black voters are rejecting Romney. She said it has less to do with the candidate than with his party's treatment of Obama, such as John Sununu calling the president "lazy" after the debate, a congressman shouting "You lie!" during the State of the Union address, claims that Obama is not a citizen and more.

In an interview, Ifill said that for black voters, such accusations feel like white people are attacking their own dignity. "In essence," she says, "they are closing ranks around Obama."

She noted that women were justifiably moved by Hillary Rodham Clinton's candidacy and Catholics flocked to the polls to elect President John F. Kennedy. Comparing black pride in Obama to white pride in Romney is a "false symmetry" because of the history of black oppression, she says, and she asked for patience from America at large.

"There should not be this resistance to pride over the first black president," Ifill says. "If we get to the fifth one, I'll be with you."

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? St. Louis manager Mike Matheny will watch the game again, once things slow down, so he can truly appreciate just what his Cardinals pulled off in Washington to return to the NL championship series.

San Francisco skipper Bruce Bochy doesn't need another look to know how impressive the reigning World Series champions' ninth-inning comeback was. The Cardinals erased a six-run deficit and rallied to win 9-7 in the nation's capital on Friday night.

Bochy's team had its own remarkable rally: Three road wins at Cincinnati to advance after dropping the first two games of the division series at home to the Reds.

The last two World Series winners sure are showing their championship mettle in mid-October.

They face off in Game 1 of the NLCS on Sunday night at San Francisco's AT&T Park.

Cuban missile crisis misconceptions endure after 50 years

HAVANA (AP) ? The world stood at the brink of Armageddon for 13 days in October 1962 when President John F. Kennedy drew a symbolic line in the Atlantic and warned of dire consequences if Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev dared to cross it.

An American U-2 spy plane flying high over Cuba had snapped aerial photographs of Soviet ballistic missile sites that could launch nuclear warheads with little warning at the United States, just 90 miles away. It was the height of the Cold War, and many people feared nuclear war would annihilate human civilization.

Soviet ships carrying nuclear equipment steamed toward Kennedy's "quarantine" zone around the island, but turned around before reaching the line. "We're eyeball-to-eyeball, and I think the other fellow just blinked," U.S. Secretary of State Dean Rusk famously said, a quote that largely came to be seen as defining the crisis.

In the five decades since the nuclear standoff between Washington and Moscow, much of the long-held conventional wisdom about the missile crisis has been knocked down, including the common belief that Kennedy's bold brinksmanship ruled the day.

On the eve of the 50th anniversary of the Cuban missile crisis, historians now say it was behind-the-scenes compromise rather than a high-stakes game of chicken that resolved the faceoff, that both Washington and Moscow wound up winners and that the crisis lasted far longer than 13 days.

Declassified documents, oral histories and accounts from decision-makers involved in the standoff have turned up new information that scholars say provides lessons for leaders embroiled in contemporary crises such as the one in Syria, where President Bashar Assad has ignored international pleas to stop attacks on civilians in an uprising that has killed more than 32,000 people.

Another modern standoff is over Iran, which the West accuses of pursuing a nuclear weapons program. In a recent U.N. speech, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu drew a red line on a cartoon bomb to illustrate that a nuclear Tehran would not be tolerated.

"Take Iran, which I have called a Cuban Missile Crisis in slow motion," said Graham Allison, author of the groundbreaking study of governmental decision-making "Essence of Decision: Explaining the Cuban Missile Crisis."

"This same process is looming on the current trajectory, inexorably, toward a confrontation at which an American president is going to have to choose between attacking Iran to prevent it becoming a nuclear weapons state or acquiescing and then confronting a nuclear weapons state," Allison said.

"Kennedy's idea would be, 'Don't let this reach the point of confrontation,'" he added. "The risks of catastrophe are too great."

Among the common beliefs about the Cuban missile crisis that have been reevaluated:

___

CONVENTIONAL WISDOM: The crisis was a triumph of U.S. brinkmanship.

REALITY: Historians say the resolution of the standoff was really a triumph of backdoor diplomacy.

Kennedy resisted pressure from aides advising that he cede nothing to Moscow and even consider a preemptive strike. He instead engaged in intense behind-the-scenes diplomacy with the Soviets, other countries and the U.N. secretary-general.

Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy met secretly with the Soviet ambassador on Oct. 27 and conveyed an olive branch from his brother: Washington would publicly reject any invasion of Cuba, and Khrushchev would withdraw the missiles from the island. The real sweetener was that Kennedy would withdraw Jupiter nuclear missiles from U.S. installations in Turkey, near the Soviet border. It was a secret pledge known only to a handful of presidential advisers that did not emerge until years later.

"As the historical record has expanded, the image of the resolute president has given way to the resolution president," Cuba analyst Peter Kornbluh wrote in an article in the November issue of Cigar Aficionado, an advance copy of which was made available to The Associated Press.

Nevertheless, the brinkmanship myth persists, with President George W. Bush in 2002 citing the missile crisis as a historical lesson in fortitude that justified a preemptive invasion of Iraq.

"The storyline is a lot easier that Kennedy stood steely-resolved, faced Khrushchev down and that's it," said Allison, a professor at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government and former senior defense adviser to several Democratic and Republican administrations. "If you hang tough enough the other guy will eventually yield ? that is actually the lesson that became part of the popular mythology."

____

CONVENTIONAL WISDOM: Washington won, and Moscow lost.

REALITY: The United States came out a winner, but so did the Soviet Union.

The Jupiter missiles are sometimes described as nearly obsolete, but they had come online just months earlier and were fully capable of striking into the Soviet Union. Their withdrawal, along with Kennedy's assurance he would not invade Cuba, gave Khrushchev enough to feel he had saved face and the following day he announced the imminent dismantling of offensive weapons in Cuba.

Soon after, a U.S.-Soviet presidential hotline was established and the two nations initiated discussions that led to the Limited Test Ban treaty and ultimately the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

"The major lesson is the necessity of compromise even when faced with a crisis like that," said Robert Pastor, an international relations professor at American University and former national security adviser for Latin America under President Jimmy Carter.

Pastor said he had many discussions about the missile crisis over the years with his late father-in-law, Robert McNamara, who was Kennedy's defense secretary. Pastor said domestic politics made it tough for both Kennedy and successive presidents to heed that lesson, as evidenced by Kennedy's intense efforts to keep the deal secret.

President Barack Obama, for example, faces considerable pressure to maintain a tough line on Cuba. Among the issues are the U.S. embargo, demands for political change, an American government subcontractor imprisoned in Cuba as an alleged spy and five Cuban intelligence agents serving long sentences in the United States.

"Look at U.S.-Cuban relations right now," Pastor said. "I don't think Obama would consider a compromise, because the pressure on him that 'You gave in to the Cubans' is too great."

__

CONVENTIONAL WISDOM: It was a high-seas showdown.

REALITY: It's true the missile crisis was full of tense moments. On Oct. 27, a U.S. warship dropped depth charges over a nuclear-armed Soviet sub and the Soviets shot down a U-2 spy plane over Cuba. It was "the darkest, most dangerous day of the crisis," Kornbluh said.

Yet after Kennedy on Oct. 22 announced a U.S. naval quarantine around the island to prevent more military equipment from arriving, Khrushchev recalled ships carrying nuclear equipment the following day, according to the 2008 book "One Minute to Midnight" by Michael Dobbs, which was based on newly examined Soviet documents.

That means that on Oct. 24, when Secretary of State Rusk made his famous "eyeball-to-eyeball" statement reacting to supposedly up-to-the-minute intelligence, the vessels were already hundreds of miles away, steaming home.

"This thing about eyeball-to-eyeball, it never was. That confrontation never took place," said Kornbluh, who is a Cuba analyst at the nongovernment National Security Archive, which has spent decades working to get missile crisis documents declassified.

___

CONVENTIONAL WISDOM: It was an intelligence coup for the CIA.

REALITY: Along with being a day late on the turnaround by Soviet ships, the CIA missed several key developments that would have helped Kennedy and his advisers navigate the crisis.

The CIA learned late in the game about the ballistic missiles' presence in Cuba, and they were already operational by the time Kennedy was informed of their existence.

The agency was also unaware of other, tactical nuclear missiles in Cuba that could have been deployed against a U.S. attack. The Soviets had even positioned nuclear-tipped missiles on a ridge above the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay in preparation for an invasion.

"They were going to obliterate the base," Kornbluh said.

___

CONVENTIONAL WISDOM: The crisis lasted just 13 days.

REALITY: This myth has been perpetuated in part by the title of Robert F. Kennedy's posthumous memoir, "Thirteen Days," as well as the 2000 movie of the same name starring Kevin Costner.

Indeed it was 13 days from Oct. 16, when Kennedy was first told about the missiles, to Oct. 28, when the Soviets announced their withdrawal.

But the "October Crisis," as it is known in Cuba, dragged on for another tense month or so in what Kornbluh dubs the "November Extension," as Washington and Moscow haggled over details of exactly what weapons would be removed.

The Soviet Union also had problems dealing with Fidel Castro, according to a Soviet document made public this month by Svetlana Savranskaya, a Russia analyst for the National Security Archive.

Deputy Premier Anastas Mikoyan traveled to Cuba that Nov. 2 and spent 20 days in tense talks with the Cuban leader, who was angry the Soviets had reached a deal without consulting him. Castro lobbied hard but unsuccessfully to keep the tactical nuclear weapons that the Americans had not learned about.

Ft. Hood shooter's lawyers argue against beard-shaving order

FORT BELVOIR, Virginia (Reuters) - Defense lawyers for Major Nidal Hasan, the Fort Hood massacre suspect, told an Army appeals court on Thursday that his court martial judge had overstepped his authority in ordering him to appear clean shaven for trial.

A prosecutor, in turn, argued before the Army Court of Criminal Appeals that the court martial judge, Colonel Gregory Gross, was empowered to maintain decorum in his courtroom. Hasan is accused of shooting to death 13 people at Fort Hood, Texas, in November 2009.

Lieutenant Colonel Kris Poppe, a defense attorney, said Army regulations only allowed forcible shaving of inmates in military correctional facilities, not by a judge's order.

"Forcible shaving exceeds the authority of the military judge," he told the seven-judge appeals panel.

Poppe added that the defense did not dispute that soldiers should appear in court in proper uniform and that the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993 allowed Hasan to have a beard.

Gross, a Fort Hood judge, ordered Hasan last month to shave off his beard or be forcibly shaven, ruling that it was not covered by laws protecting religious freedom. He said Army grooming regulations banning beards overrode his religious beliefs.

Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, has said he grew the beard in line with his Islamic beliefs. He faces 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder.

Another defense lawyer, Captain Kristin McGrory, argued that Hasan's beard would not disrupt courtroom decorum. Members of the court martial panel could be instructed to ignore Hasan's appearance, she said.

But prosecutor Captain Kenneth Borgnino said that Gross's order was within his authority to maintain decorum. Hasan's refusal to appear clean-shaven in court was an inherent disruption, he said.

"This is the equivalent of the defendant coming in with a sign that says,'Eff you, judge' or 'Eff you, panel,'" he said.

Borgnino disputed Hasan's contention the beard was part of religious observance, saying Hasan had only grown it since June. A court martial that had been set for August 20 was put on hold because of the beard issue.

Hasan's lawyers also appealed contempt of court rulings by Gross.

The appeals court gave no time frame for issuing its decisions. Rulings can be appealed to the Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces.

Police shot Hasan during his alleged rampage, leaving him paralyzed from the chest down. Hasan is being held at the Bell County jail near Fort Hood and was hospitalized in late September for an undisclosed ailment.

Sprint confirms talks with Softbank

NEW YORK (AP) ? Sprint Nextel Corp. on Thursday said Japanese cellphone company Softbank Corp. is in talks about making a potential substantial investment in the U.S. company.

Sprint, the third-largest cellphone company in the U.S., said deal could be big enough to involve a "change of control" of the company. It didn't provide any other details.

The news sent Sprint shares as high as $6.04, the highest level since 2008. In midday trading, the shares were up 66 cents, or 13 percent, at $5.70.

The Wall Street Journal, citing an unidentified person with knowledge of the talks, had reported earlier that the potential deal would help Softbank expand outside of Japan. It put the value of the transaction at more than $12.8 billion.

Sprint had a market capitalization of $15 billion at Wednesday's close, implying that Softbank may not buy the whole company.

Analysts expressed surprise at the news. There has been frequent talk of Sprint buying other U.S. cellphone companies to help it turn around, but an acquisition by a Japanese company wouldn't do much to help its competitive position in the U.S.

"We would expect to see very little synergies created with such a transaction," said Stifel Nicolaus analyst Christopher King.

Last week, media reports said Sprint's board was considering a bid for MetroPCS Communications Inc., the fifth-largest cellphone company in the U.S., to counter an offer by T-Mobile USA, which ranks as No. 4. The T-Mobile-MetroPCS deal could make the competitive situation even more difficult for Sprint, which has been losing contract-signing subscribers for years.

Shares of MetroPCS, based in Richardson, Texas, dropped 50 cents, or 4.2 percent, to $11.54 in midday trading, as investors speculated that Softbank's interest means there's less of a chance for a counterbid from Sprint.

Tokyo-based Softbank, once the underdog in Japan's telecom industry, has seen its fortunes improve ever since it started selling the iPhone in 2008. It was initially the only Japanese phone company to offer the iPhone. Rival KDDI Corp. started selling the iPhone late last year.

Meanwhile, shares of Clearwire Corp. jumped 43 cents, or 33 percent, to $1.73. Sprint owns half of the company, and investors were betting that a deal with Softbank would include a buyout of Clearwire. The company operates a wireless broadband network that Sprint resells as "Sprint 4G." Clearwire has struggled to become a viable standalone company, and it needs additional funding to upgrade its network.

The jump in Sprint shares comes on top of a powerful-runup this year. Sprint's share price has more than doubled, as investors are now more comfortable that the cost of a network revamp and the addition of the expensive iPhone to Sprint's lineup won't bankrupt the company.

Mars rock touched by NASA Curiosity has surprises

ScienceDaily (Oct. 12, 2012) ? The first Martian rock NASA's Curiosity rover has reached out to touch presents a more varied composition than expected from previous missions. The rock also resembles some unusual rocks from Earth's interior.

The rover team used two instruments on Curiosity to study the chemical makeup of the football-size rock called "Jake Matijevic" (matt-EE-oh-vick). The results support some surprising recent measurements and provide an example of why identifying rocks' composition is such a major emphasis of the mission. Rock compositions tell stories about unseen environments and planetary processes.

"This rock is a close match in chemical composition to an unusual but well-known type of igneous rock found in many volcanic provinces on Earth," said Edward Stolper of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, who is a Curiosity co-investigator. "With only one Martian rock of this type, it is difficult to know whether the same processes were involved, but it is a reasonable place to start thinking about its origin."

On Earth, rocks with composition like the Jake rock typically come from processes in the planet's mantle beneath the crust, from crystallization of relatively water-rich magma at elevated pressure.

Jake was the first rock analyzed by the rover's arm-mounted Alpha Particle X-Ray Spectrometer (APXS) instrument and about the thirtieth rock examined by the Chemistry and Camera (ChemCam) instrument. Two penny-size spots on Jake were analyzed Sept. 22 by the rover's improved and faster version of earlier APXS devices on all previous Mars rovers, which have examined hundreds of rocks. That information has provided scientists a library of comparisons for what Curiosity sees.

"Jake is kind of an odd Martian rock," said APXS Principal Investigator Ralf Gellert of the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada. "It's high in elements consistent with the mineral feldspar, and low in magnesium and iron."

ChemCam found unique compositions at each of 14 target points on the rock, hitting different mineral grains within it.

"ChemCam had been seeing compositions suggestive of feldspar since August, and we're getting closer to confirming that now with APXS data, although there are additional tests to be done," said ChemCam Principal Investigator Roger Wiens (WEENS) of Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico.

Examination of Jake included the first comparison on Mars between APXS results and results from checking the same rock with ChemCam, which shoots laser pulses from the top of the rover's mast.

The wealth of information from the two instruments checking chemical elements in the same rock is just a preview. Curiosity also carries analytical laboratories inside the rover to provide other composition information about powder samples from rocks and soil. The mission is progressing toward getting the first soil sample into those analytical instruments during a "sol," or Martian day.

"Yestersol, we used Curiosity's first perfectly scooped sample for cleaning the interior surfaces of our 150-micron sample-processing chambers. It's our version of a Martian carwash," said Chris Roumeliotis (room-eel-ee-OH-tiss), lead turret rover planner at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

Before proceeding, the team carefully studied the material for scooping at a sandy patch called "Rocknest," where Curiosity is spending about three weeks.

"That first sample was perfect, just the right particle-size distribution," said JPL's Luther Beegle, Curiosity sampling-system scientist. "We had a lot of steps to be sure it was safe to go through with the scooping and cleaning."

Following the work at Rocknest, the rover team plans to drive Curiosity about 100 yards eastward and select a rock in that area as the first target for using the drill.

During a two-year prime mission, researchers will use Curiosity's 10 instruments to assess whether the study area ever has offered environmental conditions favorable for microbial life. JPL, a division of Caltech, manages the project and built Curiosity. 'Purple haze' not just an iPhone 5 problem

20 hrs.

Apple's iPhone 5 may have sold millions, but it does have its share of flaws. One that has drawn a lot of attention is the so-called "purple haze" seen in photos when a bright light source is just out of frame. But is it really just the iPhone 5 that has this issue? Tests suggest otherwise.

Before anything, let's diagnose the problem. A number of suggestions have been floated by owners and commenters:

Oversensitivity to infrared light. No, although the shade of purple will be familiar to people who have encountered this problem: some cameras fail to filter out IR light, which overloads the sensor and blows out parts of the image. But not just on the edges, as seen?on the iPhone.

Sapphire glass lens cover. Nope: we might think of sapphires as being colorful ? blue and purple in particular, as?the gems certainly can be. But the synthetic?sapphire used as a scratch-resistant element is extremely transparent even well?outside?the visible spectrum of light.

Chromatic aberration or "fringing." This term refers to visual artifacts found in some photos, where high-contrast details have a sort of halo or double image near?them, often of a bright purple color, usually resulting from certain wavelengths of light traveling through the lens differently from others. But the iPhone haze isn't restricted to small details or color reproduction.

No, the iPhone 5 haze is a common problem called?lens flare. Lenses, even tiny, cheap ones like those in phones, are extremely complicated optically, and it's a difficult task to make all the light in the scene go exactly where the lens maker wants it to.

A bright light outside of the lens's field of view can shine light at strange angles onto the entire surface of the lens, and sometimes that light ends up being refracted inwards along with the light from the scene. The result can be anything from the colorful, geometric shapes we all recognize?to a total washing out of contrast and color.

Good lenses minimize lens flare by special coatings, complicated optical structures, and other mechanisms. But smaller lenses without room for such measures and lenses manufactured to lowers?standards will often exhibit dramatic and sometimes destructive flare ? as on the iPhone 5.

An?epidemic?of flaws or of complaints?
Anecdotal reports have built the lens flare problem on the iPhone 5 into an epidemic ? but careful testing done recently by both Consumer Reports and DPReview showed that while the iPhone 5 does exhibit plenty of lens flare, it's not alone.

The iPhone 4S showed about the same level of flare in both sites' tests, though other comparisons on the net have found it to be less. Consumer Reports also compared the iPhone 5 with a Galaxy S III, and found they both produced similar flare ? brightness, purple tint, and all.

Why so many reports from the Apple community, then? Consider that the iPhone has always been a more popular platform for photography, and more people use it to put photos online than other phones. Flickr's camera tracker has always shown the iPhone above well-known?canons from Canon, Nikon, and others, and of the top 5 phone cameras, 4 are iPhones. It's not a perfect measure, but it gives an idea of how popular the device is.

It makes sense that a very popular new product that is used more frequently for photography than its competitors would produce a ton of complaints. And of course once a person sees it, they go out and try it, putting the sun just out of frame and getting that now-familiar haze.

Apple's customer service acknowledged the issue, however, calling it "normal behavior." And the fact is that it is normal behavior ? for a bad lens.

Regardless of how many megapixels the camera has, its?low light sensitivity, the sophistication of the software, and so on, the most important aspect of the camera is the lens. And even the best phones out there have bad lenses when you compare them to almost any lens for an SLR camera. The cramped dimensions of the tiny?camera enclosure in phones mean there isn't room for the big, high-quality glass elements that go into good lenses. So you end up with lens flare.

Apple: The problem is behind the camera

The official solution is "Moving the camera slightly to change the position at which the bright light is entering the lens, or shielding the lens with your hand." This reminded some of Steve Jobs' famous remark regarding the so-called iPhone 4 "death grip": "just don't hold it that way."

But while there shouldn't be a wrong way to hold a phone in your hand, there is and has been for decades a right and a wrong way to frame a shot. Photographers and cinematographers have known for a century that positioning a bright light source just outside the frame will result in lens flare ? on some lenses more than others, but it?even happens on camera setups that cost half a million dollars.

It's up to the photographer to know their camera's shortcomings and?work around them. The iPhone 5 is no exception. Like most phones, it has a small, flare-prone lens,?and the framing of a shot should reflect that.

Do people have cause for complaint to Apple? It's possible that some phones may be afflicted more than others, just as some have arrived with dings to the finish or, in the past, yellow-tinted screens from still-wet glue. If some phones exhibit the flare significantly more than others due to a lower-quality run of lenses, that is a perfectly good reason to contact customer support and ask for a refund or replacement.

But if every unit shows more or less the same issue and in tests it appears similar to competing phones, then this is simply the result of taking the early-adopter risk of buying a device before such issues have been made known. Caveat emptor -- let the buyer beware.

RNA-based therapy brings new hope for an incurable blood cancer

ScienceDaily (Oct. 10, 2012) ? Three thousand new cases of Mantle Cell Lymphoma (MCL), a form of blood cancer, appear in the United States each year. With a median survival span of only five to seven years, according to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, this disease is devastating, and new therapies are sorely needed.

One of the characteristics that defines MCL is heightened activity in the gene CCND1, which leads to the aggressive over-production of Cyclin D1, a protein that controls the proliferation of cells, explains Prof. Dan Peer of Tel Aviv University's Department of Cell Research and Immunology. In this disease, Cyclin D1 production spins out of control, producing a 3,000 to 5,000 fold increase.

Now, in an international collaboration between academia and industry, Prof. Peer has developed a new class of drugs based on RNA interference, which can repair or destroy faulty proteins and reprogram cells to act in normal ways. The drugs have the ability to kill off the mutated protein and stop the over-proliferation of cells. Their method, proven in experiments with human cells and published in the journal PLoS One, was generously supported by the Lewis Trust and the Israeli Science Foundation.

Academia and industry work for a cure

In the past, scientists have attempted and failed to knock out this protein in the quest to develop a cure for MCL. But despite the prevalent belief that Cyclin D1 is not an effective target for therapies, Prof. Peer and his fellow researchers, including his PhD student Shiri Weinstein and Dr. Rafi Emmanuel and the Sheba Medical Center's Prof. Arnon Nagler and Dr. Avigdor Abraham, knew there was cause for hope.

To prove their theory that Cyclin D1 was indeed an appropriate target for the treatment of MCL, the researchers turned to two companies considered world-experts in RNA, Alnylam Pharmaceuticals in Cambridge, Massachusetts and Integrated DNA Technologies in Iowa, both of which donated their time and resources to the project. Working in parallel, they were able to design potent RNA interference sequences to stop the production of Cyclin D1.

In MCL, Cyclin D1 is the exclusive cause of the over-production of B Lymphocytes, cells responsible for generating antibodies, explains Prof. Peer. This makes the protein a perfect target for RNA interference -- because normal, healthy cells don't express the gene, therapies that destroy the gene will only attack cancer cells. The RNA interference that the researchers have developed targets the faulty Cyclin D1 within the cancerous cells. And when the cells are inhibited from proliferating, they sense they are being targeted and begin to "commit suicide," he says.

In the lab, the researchers have successfully used their RNA interference in human cells, a crucial step towards proving that Cyclin D1 can be targeted through the right interventions. "Ultimately, we want to be able to cure this disease, and I think we are on the way," says Prof. Peer. He hopes that their results might cause scientists to reconsider previous and unproductive results on the effectiveness of treating MCL by addressing aberrations of this protein.

Pairing with nano-delivery methods

The researchers are working to develop a mouse population with MCL to test their newly-developed therapies in vivo. Typically, new therapies for any disease are tested on human cells as well as mouse models in the lab before being taken to clinical trials in humans. But there has never before been a test using mice with this disease, says Prof. Peer, a deficiency that has limited the quality of research. The animal test will allow researchers to conduct a more cautious and in-depth investigation of this new class of drugs before moving to the clinical stage.

As for strategies for delivering the new therapy into the body, the researchers will make use of Prof. Peer's extensive work with nano-sized medical "submarines" which are designed to travel to the source of disease or disorder in the human body, and offload drugs inside specific cells or proteins as needed.

Hard Times in FarmVille

Farmville.

A scene from FarmVille

Screenshot FarmVille via Facebook.

Nobody in Silicon Valley respects Zynga. Sure, the prolific developer of Facebook games has long been considered a ?hot? startup, one that hit all the early markers of success. Zynga was founded in 2007, and within a couple years it was one of the world?s biggest game companies. Its titles?including FarmVille and CityVille and Words With Friends?have won hundreds of millions of players, a small number of whom spend vast sums to purchase virtual items that improve their standings in the games. These virtual items make for real money: Zynga?s 2011 revenue topped $1 billion, and its initial public offering last December was one of the most anticipated tech debuts of the past few years.

Yet despite its blistering early fortunes, I?ve never spoken to anyone outside Zynga who considers the company?s rise a positive development for the tech or gaming industries. Instead, it?s more common to hear grousing about how the company treats its employees poorly; that it, ahem, draws inspiration from other game makers? ideas; and that its ultimate prospects may not be that bright.

Zynga CEO Mark Pincus has defended the company?s game development strategy by arguing that the company?s versions of other people?s games are better: ?We don?t need to be first to market. We need to be the best in market,? he told employees in a memo earlier this year. He has also said that some employee complaints stem from ?growing pains?; many of the company?s current employees love working at the firm, he has said.

Despite Pincus? statements to the contrary, Zynga feels like a firm without a purpose. The major difference between today?s Internet companies and ones that were founded during the dot-com bubble of the 1990s is that modern firms believe they?re changing the world. Though their claims may be dubious, Facebook and Twitter genuinely believe that they?re going to make a killing and they?re going to improve the lives of billions. By that standard Zynga is an unfortunate throwback to the best-forgotten bubble years. All the gaming company does is convince suckers to spend a lot of time and money tending virtual flowerbeds?and it didn?t even invent those virtual flowerbeds. If you?re looking for this generation?s Pets.com, Zynga is pretty much it.

Now Zynga has entered what looks like a death spiral, and nobody is surprised. This week the firm announced that users aren?t flocking to its latest games, and as a result it?s lowering its revenue expectations for the year. The announcement sparked another brutal slide in Zynga?s stock price; shares are now trading for less than $2.50 each, more than 75 percent less than at Zynga?s IPO. Zynga has enough cash in the bank to stave off immediate panic, but now that the possibility of earning stock-market millions is looking dim, a number of the firm?s top employees have left.

During the last few months, the company has lost its chief creative officer, chief operating officer, marketing chief, the general manager of CityVille, and the creators of Words With Friends. This week Laurence Toney, the former manager of Zynga Poker, also quit. That doesn?t bode well for Zynga?s last best hope?gambling. The company is launching a ?real-money? version of its poker game outside the United States next year, and it?s also pushing for a federal law to legalize online gambling in this country. But if it can?t stop its top employees from departing in the meantime, it might not get that payoff.

It?s difficult to muster much sadness about Zynga?s troubles. I?m not making a moralistic argument about the merits of casual gaming. I don?t think there?s anything wrong with the good fun people have playing Zynga?s titles, and if some people are spending too much money and time on them, that?s true of a lot of pastimes. The problem is Zynga itself. The company finds itself in a hole because it has never created anything truly novel. Its biggest titles were either modeled after other people?s games or (as in the case of Words With Friends) purchased through acquisitions.

In some ways Zynga?s demise?along with Facebook?s IPO fizzle and investors? newfound distaste for advertiser-driven consumer sites?is a good sign for the tech industry. There was a moment earlier this year when Silicon Valley threatened to return to the unrealistic go-go years. The high-water mark was the early summer. Around that time a delivery man knocked at my door bearing a package from Zynga. It was about the size of a shoebox, but it weighed nothing. And that?s pretty much what it contained?I opened the box to find a folded-up paper airplane sitting in a wad of packaging tissue. The airplane was an invitation to an upcoming Zynga press event. I found the whole thing distasteful. Like the million-dollar rooftop launch parties and the Super Bowl sock puppets that defined the last boom, the invitation was a waste of money and creative energy that should have been used for something more productive. (It was also a horrendous waste of paper. I didn?t go to the press event.)

Zynga?s seeming decline marks the end of the bubble. It suggests that investors and customers can?t be hoodwinked for long. Now, if the company has any hope of surviving, it?s going to have to do something that it?s never done before: start building amazing things the world hasn?t seen before.

Making The Most Of Your Life Today | Rob ... - Empower Network

The first step in solving a self improvement problem is admitting that you have one. Read on for a few tips to help get you started.

Create your own pep talk. Write down everything you like about yourself. Carry it with you, and refer to it when necessary. You can even record yourself reading it aloud and listen to it often. Why not?

Self-discipline is a key characteristic of any successful personal development plan. Develop a sense of self-control to manage your worldly desires. For example, you may need to overcome the urge to eat more than you should or to refrain from consuming too much alcohol. By implementing self control and restraint you will be able to prevent harmful vices from having a negative effect on your mind and body.

Your library and bookstore probably have an entire section devoted to self-help. You could well derive some great, life-changing ideas from the right books in the field. Before you pick a book, read the reviews to make sure that it is worthwhile because some personal development books are better than others.

Be pleased about all that you can do well instead of focusing on what you cannot do. No two people are alike and everyone is good at different things, which is part of what makes our world so diverse and interesting. Never focus on the skills that you haven?t mastered. It is far more productive to look for new opportunities to develop the skills that you naturally possess.

Failure can be devastating to one?s ego when one is trying to better oneself through self improvement. The good news is that failure can be an enlightening learning experience. For example, failures highlight your strengths and possible problem areas. Try to see every failure as an accomplishment, since you will have learned more about yourself.

Know the obstacles you face before you hit them. Many people have problems doing this. Once you can pinpoint your own weaknesses, it is easier to accept them, act on them, and change them. It?s easier to move forward if you take care of what is standing in your way.

Avoid making a personal development goal that is unnecessarily complicated, or not well defined. Setting smaller, easily attainable goals prevents you from becoming discouraged. If you are clear about your goals, it will be easier to measure how well you have achieved them.

Find people you can relate to. If you are surrounded by people who are negative or who do not believe in you, eventually you might start to believe them. So keeping company with positive people with positive outlooks will benefit you in many ways.

Do you have trouble finding the right person with whom you would like to share your life? Try meeting someone on the Internet. Many couples meet online now. A new love could be waiting for you on one of these sites. Both have their benefits and their downfalls.

Always work towards your personal best. When you are looking for ways to become a better person, follow your passions. While it is almost impossible to be the best at everything we do, aspiring to inspire other people is an admirable and worthy goal for oneself. Look for different ways to improve the quality of your work; your career and your self-esteem will surely benefit.

Look at these tips and give them careful considerations; this can help reshape how you think and feel. Allow yourself some leeway
