The "Queen Bee" boat that was lost in the Atlantic Ocean nearly four years ago returns to North Carolina after washing ashore in Spain. WITN's Dan Yesenosky reports.

Four years after a strong wave tossed them off their yellow fishing boat, Queen Bee, off the coast of Nantucket, Mass., Scott Douglas and his brother in law, Rich St. Pierre, climbed aboard again -- in a North Carolina parking lot.
In January, the U.S. Coast Guard called Douglas to tell him that the vessel, a 26-foot center console fishing boat made by Regulator, had washed up on the Spanish coast. It?was rusty and covered in barnacles, but intact. Almost six months later, the North Carolina boatmaker retrieved the Queen Bee and brought it back to Edenton, where Douglas and St. Pierre were finally reunited with it Tuesday.

"It?s difficult to put yourself back ? in that frame of mind, but getting on the boat was definitely emotional,? Douglas, 59, of Connecticut, told NBC News. ?I was on the boat, it was a near-death experience. You don?t get to relive those things too often and, in many ways actually, you don?t want to relive them.?

It was an overcast and windy August 2008 day, and the two men were out fishing. St. Pierre, 69, was at the helm, and the water was restless. Waves crashed into the boat, rocking it, and a rogue one knocked the two men into the water.
Douglas remembers thinking the water was not too cold.?"The only way I was going to survive was just to get started, not tread water," he told NBC News in January.?
The men made their way to shore, swimming more than one mile, and catching one last glimpse of the Queen Bee. It looked "pretty happy," rocking side to side, sailing away from its owner, Douglas said.
?I think she tried to do what she could do and then she decided to go on a trip,? he added. "We wish this boat could tell the story.?
Lt. Joe Klinker, a U.S. Coast Guard spokesman, told NBC News in January that the most likely scenario is that the boat somehow got out into the Gulf Stream.
The boat of a man who was tossed off his vessel in the waters off Nantucket more than three years ago has washed up in Spain. WNBC-TV's Katy Tur reports.
"From there it may drift north off the coast of northern Canada and then east with the North Atlantic currents," Klinker told NBC News.
Based on salvage law, the boat belonged to Spain, but it didn't want it. The Spanish government released it to the insurance company, which released it to Douglas, who, in turn, relinquished it to Regulator. Co-owner and President Joan Maxwell told NBC News she couldn't believe how good the boat's condition was.

"Unbelievable to think that a boat could survive in the Atlantic for three and a half years," she said.
"We have no clue what this boat encountered in the time frame that it was gone."

The seats still had their cushions, and the company was able to trade in the boat's batteries, Maxwell said. A nickel was found in the glove compartment. The port side looked as though it might have been hit, but with a new engine, the Queen Bee could sail again, Maxwell said.

Regulator, which employs about 70 people and has been in business since 1988, plans to show off the boat at exhibits and shows this fall.
St. Pierre, who now lives in Nantucket and says he is nowhere near as comfortable on the water as he used to be, told NBC News he has written a draft of a children's book chronicling the imagined adventures of the Queen Bee.
"The story about the boat has captured everybody?s imagination. You can imagine just what must have happened to it in those three and a half years," he said.

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) ? Curiosity took its first test drive around the gravel-strewn Martian terrain Wednesday, preparation for the ultimate road trip to find out if the red planet's environment could have supported life.
The six-wheel NASA rover did not stray far from the spot where it landed more than two weeks ago. It rolled forward about 15 feet, rotated to a right angle and reversed a short distance, leaving tracks in the ancient soil.
Mission managers were ecstatic that the maiden trek of the $2.5 billion mission was glitch-free.
"It couldn't be more important," said project manager Peter Theisinger at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. "We built a rover. So unless the rover roves, we really haven't accomplished anything ... It's a big moment."
The short spin came a day after Curiosity successfully wiggled its wheels to test its steering capabilities.
Curiosity landed in Gale Crater near the Martian equator Aug. 5 to explore whether the environment once supported microbial life. The touchdown site has been named Bradbury Landing in honor of the late "The Martian Chronicles" author Ray Bradbury, who would have turned 92 on Wednesday.
The rover's ultimate destination is Mount Sharp, a towering mountain that looms from the ancient crater floor. Signs of past water have been spotted at the base, providing a starting point to hunt for the chemical building blocks of life.
Before Curiosity journeys toward the mountain, it will take a detour to an intriguing spot 1,300 feet away where it will drill into bedrock. With the test drive out of the way, Curiosity was expected to stay at its new position for several days before making its first big drive ? a trip that will take as long as a month and a half.
Curiosity won't head to Mount Sharp until the end of the year.
Rover driver Matt Heverly said the first drive took about 16 minutes with most of the time used to take pictures. Heverly said the wheels did not sink much into the ground, which appeared firm.
"We should have smooth sailing ahead of us," he said.
After an action-packed landing that delicately lowered it to the surface with nylon cables, Curiosity has entered a slow streak. Since the car-size rover is the most sophisticated spacecraft sent to Mars, engineers have taken their time to make sure it's in tiptop shape and that its high-tech tools work before it delves into its mission.
Curiosity joins the rover Opportunity, which has been exploring craters in Mars' southern hemisphere since 2004. Opportunity's twin, Spirit, fell silent in 2010 after getting stuck in a sand trap.
Earlier this week, Curiosity exercised its robotic arm for the first time, flexing its joints and motors before engineers stowed it again. Weeks of additional tests were planned before it can drill and scoop up Martian soil.
The nuclear-powered rover has been tracking levels of dangerous radiation on the Martian surface in an effort to guide future astronaut landings. It also powered up its weather station, taking hourly readings of air and ground temperatures, pressure and wind conditions.
Over the weekend, it fired its laser at a humble rock to study what it's made of. Unsurprisingly, the zapped rock was typical of other Martian rocks, made of basalt.
During the checkups, scientists discovered a damaged wind sensor, possibly after it was hit by rocks that landed on the rover's instrument deck during landing. Deputy project scientist Ashwin Vasavada said the broken sensor will not jeopardize the mission since there's a spare.
Since nailing the daredevil landing, the rover team has been acknowledged by President Barack Obama. Gov. Jerry Brown, who declared Wednesday as "Space Day" visited the lab and donned 3-D glasses to view an animation of Curiosity's first drive on a big screen in the control room.

I love playing video games in the limited free time I have in between being a librarian and a parent of young children. Time is fleeting, but if I can play a game by myself for 30 minutes here and there or with my seven-year-old son, it?s great to have the opportunity to play. Video games and comic books have always had a connection with each other, from the days of the short-lived comic book series Atari Force (no, seriously!) published by DC Comics, to Archie Comics? long-running Sonic the Hedgehog monthly comic book, to Marvel?s HALO graphic novels. Comic book heroes can make for some great video games?such as the Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City video games?and in return, video game heroes can make for some great comic books. In the future, we?re going to be exploring some of the best video game tie-in comic books for kids and teens currently available.
Ratchet & Clank Written by TJ Fixman Illustrated by Adam Archer Published by Wildstorm/DC Comics, 2011 ISBN: 978-1-4012-3163-7
I was happy to see that WildStorm/DC Comics, in conjunction with Sony Entertainment, published a graphic novel in 2011 called Ratchet & Clank. The graphic novel is tied in with the popular video game series of the same name. The first Ratchet and Clank game was originally released in 2002 by Insomniac Games for the Playstation 2 game console, and the series has had multiple sequels over the years on the Playstation 3 console. Every game in the series has been released exclusively for the PlayStation family of consoles owned by Sony Computer Entertainment.
The game series features the space adventures of Ratchet (an adventurous, orange-colored, cat-like alien with a penchant for fixing things) and Clank (his diminutive robot companion). Together they regularly save the galaxy from evil. The comic book story was written by senior writer TJ Fixman from Insomniac Games, who is no stranger to the characters: He wrote the stories for four Ratchet & Clank games, and it?s great that Insomniac Games? lead writer is there to make sure the graphic novel feels just like yet another adventure.
As the story begins, Ratchet and Clank are recuperating on the planet Veldin after their adventures from the game Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time. Their rest and relaxation is short-lived: The newly appointed President of the Galaxy, Qwark?the bumbling coward superhero?shows up to tell them that planets are starting to disappear and he needs their help. When the planet Veldin disappears with Ratchet and Clank on it, they have no choice but to figure out who?s kidnapping planets. Soon they?re on the run along with the aid of characters from the video game series, including fan favorites Sasha Phyronix, Talwyn Apogee, and the robots Cronk and Zephyr.
The story is a lot of fun and sure to appeal to the fans of the video game series. I wanted to see Ratchet use really fun and outrageous firearms, as he does in the games, like my favorite, the Plasma Beast ? which is a gun that shoots out a creature that fights for you ? but I was sadly disappointed. There are a couple of weapons, but not anything that stands out other than the Omniwrench and a Combuster. Violence in the book is practically G-rated. There are no deaths, and all the destruction of any kind happens to robots. Also the only swear words are an occassional ?Oh, Crap? that Ratchet says several times.
I do think that a one page short bio of the characters should have been included to let newbie readers who never played a Ratchet & Clank game know who the characters are. I have only been exposed to the series by the games A Crack in Time,Tools of Destruction, and All 4 One, and I had some difficulty figuring out who was who. Granted, I?ve never played the games completely through and have been progressing at the level of, well, a 7-year-old who doesn?t play the games all the time because his parents don?t want him playing them all the time. I never had a PS2, so I have never played the original games.
Also, I have a complaint about the art. I do think that Adam Archer did a great job?the cover art by the Creaturebox is what really draws the reader in, with a highly animated style that helps to encompass the fun and adventurous side of this game series. Sadly, Adam?s artwork is nowhere near as kinetic and expressive. Also, the coloring between Jonny Rench and Tony Avina is disproportionate throughout the book. In the first few chapters, the coloring is absolutely gorgeous, and Ratchet appears lightly inked with an almost airbrushed quality to his look. In other chapters of the graphic novel, the artwork?s coloring is flat and thickly inked and is distracting.
For fans of the video game, though, you can?t get any better than having Insomniac Games? TJ Fixman writing a new Ratchet and Clank adventure. All that?s missing is a video game controller. For those who haven?t played the game series and were intriqued by the story, despite the lack of the ?Who?s Who? roster this book needed, there?s a lot of good fun sci-fi adventure here, mixed in with plenty of humor. By the end I?m sure you?ll be a fan of the series.

Accra, Ghana: Representatives of in-country health boards charged with overseeing governance of malaria programs throughout Africa? gathered last week in Accra, Ghana for the Pan-Africa Summit. The participants, made up of doctors, community health workers, educators and malaria program coordinators?received follow-up training in effective program planning, financial management, and best practices for monitoring and evaluation. The five-day meeting was sponsored by Imagine No Malaria and hosted by the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). The UMCOR health board strategy was established in 2009 as a way to oversee planning and execution, as well as effectively evaluate malaria programs in each of the countries where there is a United Methodist presence. These boards submit grant applications to secure funding from UMCOR and other organizations. ?From the onset of this campaign, we?ve been working to inspire sustainability and local program ownership,? said Shannon Trilli, Director of Global Health Initiatives for UMCOR. ?The Pan-Africa Summit gives us an opportunity to follow-up where those grants have been awarded and make sure the health boards have the support and training they need in budgeting, communication and program planning to maximize their effectiveness and ultimately save lives.? African annual conference health board members are selected based on their skills in finance and accounting, legal and regulatory, medical, community, technology, hospital or clinic management grant writing and represent church interests. They oversee hospitals, clinics and posts, as well as programs such as malaria, nutrition, HIV/AIDS, maternal and child health care, community based primary health care, and other diseases of poverty. ?The people attending this conference are doing work that is critical to saving lives. We hope this conference will empower them to open new doors and make it easier for them to accomplish their work,? said the Rev. Larry Hollon, chief executive of United Methodist Communications. Hollon noted that in addition to United Methodist Communications and UMCOR, the health boards will be working closely with United Methodist bishops, conference leadership, national and local governments, the General Board of Global Ministries, ecumenical partners and other non-governmental organizations. Countries that are represented at the Pan-Africa Summit include Angola (west), Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, South Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Mozambique, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Zimbabwe and Malawi. Each country is encouraged to customize their anti-malaria efforts to meet the needs of their own people.
