A global union has slammed Ports of Auckland bosses and called on the Auckland Council to step in after striking workers were issued with a lockout notice.
The International Transport Workers' Federation, based in London, said the decision was "unbelievable, unlawful and practically suicidal".
The port company agreed to a four-week moratorium on its plans to sack the 292 workers and hire contract labour. As a result the watersiders voted on Wednesday to end their strike action.
However, the port responded by giving two weeks' notice of an indefinite lockout starting at Easter. It has left the wharfies in limbo for the intervening fortnight. They say they are ready to go back to work, but the port has said this is "unrealistic" due to rostering issues.
Yesterday the union filed an injunction declaring the lockout unlawful.
"It's like watching a car crash in slow motion. Do Richard Pearson and Tony Gibson have a death wish for this port? Just when a negotiated settlement was within reach they have trampled on those hopes and issued a lockout notice," said Paddy Cremlin, the federation's president.
"The thugs in this dispute are in the boardroom at POAL slinging out workers, locking out workers, trying to bring in strikebreakers from outside New Zealand to replace a willing and skilled workforce. Gibson and Person beggar belief. It's likely they want to turn this port into a disaster area."
Cremlin also called on Mayor Len Brown to "step in and replace those in the POAL board" with people who are instead "willing to run this important asset properly for the benefit of the city of Auckland".

Romney rivals draw on "Etch A Sketch" line, toy sales soar
(Reuters) - Mitt Romney's presidential hopes may have been shaken up when an aide compared his campaign to an "Etch A Sketch" toy, but the publicity blitz has been a delightful surprise for the U.S. makers of the well-known erasable children's art tablet.
Ohio Art, the low-key, family-run company that has made "Etch A Sketch" for half a century, saw its sales of the toy soar 1,556 percent above normal levels on Amazon.com within 24 hours of the gaffe. The company's thinly traded stock more than doubled, to $9.65.
Senior Romney adviser Eric Fehrnstrom was speaking about what would happen if Romney won the Republican nomination and faced President Barack Obama in the November election when he drew what has become an unfortunate comparison for Romney.
"You hit a reset button for the fall campaign," Fehrnstrom told a CNN interviewer on Wednesday. "Everything changes. It's almost like an 'Etch A Sketch'. You can kind of shake it up, and we start all over again."
Romney's rivals - Republicans and Democrats alike - seized on the comment as proof the Republican frontrunner was a flip-flopping waffler whose positions on issues such as healthcare were not to be trusted.
His Republican opponents gleefully waved the $12.99 red plastic toy, which lets children make drawings they can then erase by shaking it.
"I am not the 'Etch A Sketch' candidate!" Romney challenger Rick Santorum declared to supporters.
"Etch A Sketch" mania has erupted online, the toy triggering a reaction normally reserved for the likes of the Kardashians.
It elbowed out NFL star Tim Tebow on Yahoo's Top 5 searches and swept Twitter's top slot for two days running.
On television, "Etch A Sketches" took over cable newsrooms. "I wish we could erase the U.S. debt," one commentator wisecracked as he fumbled with the plastic knobs.
For Ohio Art, the attention has been manna from toy heaven.
"It's kind of like a Bill Clinton-Monica Lewinsky amount of media interest," says Bill Southard, who has been doing Etch A Sketch's promotions for the past 18 years.
"This is the kind of publicity flurry you usually only see in a crisis or a product malfunction."
Ohio Art President Larry Killgallon was sitting in a meeting in the Chicago office of Bruce Lund, the inventor of last year's hit toy, "Doggie Doo", on Wednesday.
Suddenly, Killgallon noticed his iPad, which he covers in an "Etch A Sketch" case, was being blitzed with emails, and his similarly clad iPhone started ringing.
"I've never seen anything like this," said Killgallon, dazed from a 24-hour publicity blitz. "Our target audience is four-to-eight year olds."
Larry runs Ohio Art with his brother, Bill, and his son, marketing head Martin.
The first "Etch A Sketch" rolled off Ohio Art's production line on July 12, 1960, back when Larry and Bill's dad was helping run the place.
By the 1990s, production had moved to China and "Etch A Sketch" remains Ohio Art's number-one selling toy.
In between interviews, they decided to send each candidate a box of etch a sketches, but the Obama administration missed out.
Larry Killgoran describes the clan as right-leaning but free-thinking.
"It's like the 'Etch A Sketch'. There's both a left and a right knob and if they work together they can draw a circle," Killgoran says of the U.S. political situation.

Corporate ERP in International Business
Modern mid-market companies often cross national borders and go internationally both in marketing and production outsourcing. ?If you are saving on cheaper manufacturing, the unexpected cost might be in the Corporate ERP selection for your foreign facility. ?When you were building and growing your company in the United States and selected your ERP and Accounting application platform in the past, the decision was unlikely based on the future plans to go internationally. ?Let?s review possible issues, see popular combinations of ERP platforms and see pluses and minuses:
1. ERP system localization concept. ?It includes two sides: local languages support and compliance with business related legislation. ?Let?s talk about language first. ?If you are using something like Dynamics GP in the USA, you might be surprised that Microsoft Business Solutions doesn?t have it translated into such popular languages as Chinese, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, German.
?It is possible to translate some forms and reports into these languages (Chinese would be the toughest one to deal with, as Great Plains Dexterity doesn?t support Unicode, required for hieroglyph based alphabet), but it is extra cost to be absorbed, plus each new version translation would require some work to be redone. ?Foreign country legislation compliance: this is even more difficult issue, especially in regional powers, such as Brazil, Russia, China. ?Even if you translate your domestic system into Chinese, it would be very difficult to align it to the required business regulations. ?In smaller countries the regulation might be a lesser issue and international GAAP is place. ?Having said these words about localization, we would rather recommend you to pick ERP, which is already localized in the targeted foreign country

The magnitude of the foreign operations. ?You may use high-end ERP and MRP platform in US, which is also available in the country, where you bought or built the facility. ?However you may now meet the dilemma to think about implementing it internationally with the cost, which is not proportional to the magnitude of the operations (this might be just smaller research or production facility, where in USA you are using Oracle Financials). ?It might be more feasible to pick something that is rather small to mid-market ERP, available in the country of destination
3. Consolidation options. ?If you decide to choose different platforms in Headquarters and international subsidiaries, there is apparent need to consolidate financial reporting, plus have reasonable managerial control. ?Here you may consider two approaches: Consolidation on the reporting level and consolidation in General Ledger. ?Let?s talk about the first option. ?Popular Financial Reporting packages, such as FRx and Microsoft Management Reporter allow you to consolidate your Headquarter (Dynamics GP, AX, SL, NAV) with Trial Balance exported into Excel. ?This is very popular approach, it might be simple enough, but it gives you very limited information about foreign subsidiary financial transactions details. ?Second approach is also traditional, where you create GL level only company copy in your Corporate ERP in Headquarters and then schedule automatic posted GL Entries export, transportation (via Internet) and import into the Headquarter based company shadow copy
4. Popular combinations. ?Let?s assume that you are deploying Microsoft Dynamics GP (formerly known as Great Plains Dynamics or eEnterprise) in US, and you are expanding to Brazil, Russia or China. ?Look at the following opportunity. ?You are deploying GP on the same SQL 2008 Server, where you are also installing SAP Business One 8.81 and open SB1 user interface to the users in China, Brazil, Russia. ?SAP B1 is localized in the mentioned countries, you have control over all the companies by installing English SB1 interface for your Accounting, AR, AP department in the Headquarters (actually interface doesn?t need to be installed on the preferred languages, you can switch between languages in the user menu). ?You export SB1 GL transactions from the same SQL Server (into Excel) and import them every night via GP Integration Manager (from Excel trial balance, or consider more sophisticated way of opening Advanced ODBC connection in Integration Manager to read entries directly at the source). ?In our opinion this approach is very cost elegant, as it allows you to eliminate IT services cost to support ERP servers in several countries and provide IT support directly from Headquarters, and by doing so you are exercising additional control over possibly looking for some independence foreign operations. ?The combination of tandems could be discussed, as most of the mid-market packages have reasonable integration tools and flexibility
5. Special Recommendations for Brazil. ?In this country SAP B1 is very popular and well known. ?Here in North America we are generally considering SB1 as dedicated to small business, but in Brazil it is considered as mid-market accounting and MRP application. ?Localization add-on is about k to budget (as addition to Business One user licenses and implementation cost). ?If you have large manufacturing facility there, consider Dynamics AX (former name was Axapta). ?Among the locally coded ERP take a look at Microsiga
6. Special Recommendations for Russian Federation. ?SAP BO is localized and translated into Russian. ?For larger operations consider AX Axapta. ?If your concern about local tax code compliance is high, request 1S Accounting (1S Bukhgalteria) presentation and do your homework
7. Chinese recommendations. ?Here both AX and SAP B1 are localized
8. CRM platform. ?We recommend Microsoft CRM (also referred as Dynamics CRM), as it is marketed and sold in all the countries

Kuwait targets 4 million barrels oil daily by 2020
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates ? Kuwait's oil minister says the country aims to boost its crude production capacity to 4 million barrels a day by 2020, up from 3 million barrels now.
Oil Minister Hani Hussein made the comments Monday at the start of an energy forum in the Gulf nation, according to a report by state news agency KUNA.
Hussein says the International Energy Forum is being held amid "very critical circumstances," citing concerns about Iranian threats to shut the key Strait of Hormuz waterway, the Eurozone crisis and rising oil prices.
Kuwait is OPEC's fourth largest oil exporter.

EU open to settlement with e-book publishers
BRUSSELS (Reuters) - EU regulators are open to a settlement with e-book publishers owned by Lagardere
Since last December, the European Commission has been investigating whether the publishers fixed prices with Apple Inc for electronic books, an action that might have blocked rivals such as Amazon and hurt consumers.
Lagardere's Hachette Livre unit and News Corp's Harper Collins are being investigated. The other three publishers are CBS Corp's
"This possibility of a settlement is only open in the case the publishers will be ready to remove all our objections," European Commissioner for Competition Joaquin Almunia told reporters.
He said EU regulators were co-coordinating with U.S. counterparts, which are also looking into such pricing deals under an agency model adopted in 2010 in which publishers set the retail price.
Under the Commission's settlement procedures, companies could offer concessions to avert a fine of up to 10 percent of their global sales. Regulators would then drop their investigation without the companies admitting to any wrongdoing.
U.S. regulators have warned Apple and the five publishers that it plans to sue them, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters last week. The person also said several of the companies were holding talks to settle the case.
The wholesale model used by Amazon allows retailers to pay for the product and charge what they like.

Robert Griffin III To Redskins? Washington To Reportedly Trade For No. 2 Pick
WASHINGTON ? The Washington Redskins are poised to pay a hefty price to move into position to take Robert Griffin III.
A person familiar with the trade said the Redskins have a deal in place to acquire the No. 2 pick in the NFL draft from the St. Louis Rams. Washington will give up its first- and second-round selections this year, plus first-round picks in 2013 and 2014 in the trade, which can't be completed until the new league year begins Tuesday.

The Rams were in the market to trade because they already have their franchise quarterback, 2010 No. 1 overall pick Sam Bradford. The Redskins had to make an offer they felt would outbid the quarterback-needy Cleveland Browns, who could have offered both the No. 4 and No. 22 selections in this year's draft.
Cleveland general manager Tom Heckert acknowledged Thursday he had talked to the Rams.
"We feel very comfortable staying at four and getting a good player there, and that could happen," he said. "And we feel comfortable in moving down and getting more picks, we really do. It's way early to start talking about this stuff."
By sacrificing four premium draft picks, Shanahan is reversing the plan he set in motion last year to stockpile picks to rebuild Washington's depleted roster. The Redskins, however, have plenty of space under the salary cap and can be aggressive in plugging their holes when free agency begins Tuesday.
Grossman and Beck combined to throw 24 interceptions last year, putting the Redskins just one behind league leaders Philadelphia and Buffalo on the way to a fourth consecutive last-place finish in the division. McNabb, acquired in a trade from the Eagles, was the starter for the first 13 games in 2010, when Washington went 6-10.
Griffin, therefore, would get to work with a coach who has a reputation for working well with quarterbacks and designing effective offensive schemes. But Shanahan would likewise rely on Griffin to help retain the coach's legacy. Shanahan has won only one playoff game since John Elway retired after capturing the second of back-to-back Super Bowls with the Denver Broncos in 1998, and he hasn't been to the playoffs in his last five seasons as a coach.
The Rams have won 10 games the last three seasons, so they need help across the board and the extra draft picks can plug several holes.

Women especially took to it for the purpose of commuting, but novice riders of both genders loved it for its ease of use. Honda reached the standing of the largest manufacture of motorcycles by 1959, simply because of the success of this bike. They made the decision that it was time for growth all over the world.
